Howdy fella's,
I'm just gutted......... I had noticed that Rick's FB page was no longer visible a while back and thought maybe he was taking a break. There were always new pics of him and his dog Ozzy aka The Oz from some new hike they had done.
When I say he was an avid hiker, I mean, he was an avid hiker. Always some new post from the side or mountain with Oz in the pic....
What I can say that he is a lucky guy to have passed away doing something he loved with his best friend at his side. We should all be so damn lucky.
Rick was one of the best technical riders that I have ever had the opportunity to ride with. I had told Rick that I had always wanted to ride the Gifford Pinchot National forest as I had seen one of these rides written in Dirt Bike magazine and authored by Tom Webb. Rick told me that he had ridden up there for years and we set up a meet there in the summer of 2005. To say that ride was epic does not do it justice... On the longest ride Rick and I both carried one gallon of fuel on our backs for the range we would need and left at 0930hrs in the morning and did not get back until 2230hrs at night with one headlight between us. What a ride! I'm positive I posted the ride and pics on this site but with so many server changes etc... the pics all disappeared long ago and I don't know if the post is even still here.
Another great ride I did with Rick was as his guest with some of his long time riding friends up in Idaho. That was two days of unbelievable single track riding I've ever done. His friend Rick Crosland had given him the nick name Nadia, as in Nadia Komanichi (sp?) the gymnast because so skillfully maneuvered his bike through the most technical sections on the trail. After that ride whenever I called him, it was always to Nadia.
Being that I'm now 55, and I think he and I were the same age, it really hits home. I had planned in my upcoming retirement to visit Rick and try and get him to go for a ride with me.
I will surely miss his optimistic tone and smile. We are diminished, but, we are also enriched by our association with Rick.
Warm Regards,
DaleEO!
