Antifreeze question

This might be a stupid question but here I go,

I am cleaning out the radiator and cooling system of my FE350 -93.

Went to the local car spare shop to get some coolant/antifreeze.
They asked me what quality that was specified and continued to explain that aluminium engineblocks would have special requirements.
He could not advice on what quality to get.

Anybody that can explain/recommend what quality?

The green colour ethylene-glycol based is the stuff.Standards are astm d3306/d4985, BS 6580,Afnor nfr 15-601 and SAE J 1034

A lot of us also use Engine Ice, whether it does work or not is something I could never verify myself. Motul Motocool is another popular product, although harder to find in America. Evans coolant is something that is use in hot climates, as the boiling point is much higher, but then how do you know you are dangerousely overheating and it's time to stop? (Ok, maybe that burning sensation on your left leg should give you a hint).

I use gm's dextron...orange in color and made for aluminum. been up to 266 degress F without a problem. if its good enough for a northstar its good enough for a berg..........LOL.

To help protect the aluminum try mixing antifreeze a water wetter type product.

I think is is important to use a silicate free coolant liquid.

It is to prevent galvanic corrosion between different metals in the cooling system.

If you use a coolant that contains silicates (salt) it will conduct electric current and the aluminum in the engine will act as a sacrificing anode for the steel parts in the cooling system.

I use Maxima Coolanol/Cool Aid mix.This is an ethylene glycol solution that is low silicate as well.The cool aid is similar to water wetter.GM's Dex-Cool is junk imo.It is propylene glycol and has a lower boiling point than ethylene glycol and breaks down quickly in a cooling system and has few if any rust inhibitors.Far from being "long life" it's only claim to fame is that it is non toxic-and more expensive.Have a look in any GM expansion tank-the "mud" at the bottom and on the sides gives you a good idea of what is now plugging up your coolant passages.
