A few questions

What do people do whilst changing gear on there bergs. I've just bought an 03 FE400. I use the clutch to up shift and down shift. I've read on the KTM forum that people just bang it through the gears up and down. Is the box designed for this or will it reck it. is it just something racers do who like rebuilding gearboxes?

Forgotten my second question now but i'm sure it'll come back! :roll:

I bang the gears in upward (Going form first to sixth) but use the clutch downwards. However, if gearing not at full throttle, I use the clutch both ways. Always remember to let the throttle go when gearing without clutching.
And.. I always wait until the oil is warm before I do.

racing or not, no clutch lever on the way up. racing; on the way down, clutch in and cog away with the foot. same with green laning. just doing it more gently that's all.

you'll have no problems at all with this.

That'll make shifting up whilst standing much easier. always felt like i was going to fall of whilst clutching in as described above. I always use the clutch on the way down as it tends to lock up else.
I remebered my second question! I've got a slight oil leak from the oil level vindow, just a slight weap really.
How much effort is this to fix?
Is it a home job or a shop job?
Am I going to be eating nothing but pasta for the next six months to pay for it?
I change the oil every race and i never seem to notice it going down between changes.
Should I just leave it until it leaks out at a quicker rate than i can put it in?

One other question, there's a slight graunch (slightly higher pitched than a graunch, maybe a high pitched graunch) when i pull away if the bike is cold. It goes away when the bike has been used a bit. I'm using a semi synthetic lubricant as recomended by my local dealer. There seems to be plenty of bite left in the clutch. I only use the bike at the weekends and then only for a couple of hours.
Is this anything to worry about?

I'm going to jump in here and probably piss some off. :lol:

IMHO the clutch growling is a result of lack of oil between the plates. I make sure mine are well oiled by using the clutch EVERY time I shift, either up or down. Use of the clutch also reduces the chance of chipping a gear dog, and thereby reduces the amount of circulating metal particles in the oil. :wink:

I think the clutch noise you hear is the inner hub rattling a bit. My 01 does the same thing until it's warmed up a bit.

And I'm with Joe here, I use the clutch at every opportunity, up or down. When up shifting and standing, I just feather it a bit when I chop the throttle and up shift.

The only time I don't use the clutch is when I don't dare let go and need to upshift!!
