A bit of help needed with rocker cover inspection

Nic,

You should be able to find a feeler gauge @ .15mm easily at any auto parts store, albertsons, safeway, vitorias secret, subway, or Fatberger.... maybe not Fatberger but subways put about .15mm of dead animal product on their samwiches these days and I would have to suspect they measure it with a feeler.... :D

ps. Mmmmm, I think I just made myself hungry for a double fat w/cheese from Fatberger!

Regards,

How the h... does one measure .15mm? Or is it just an idea, that there needs to be a little bit of play but almost nothing really?

Isn't that about .006"? (.0059")

.006" = .15mm

I actually never ate there although I was invited...

Sorry, private joke.

Thanks, Joe, I guess I'll have to get a feeler gauge.

But... is it really possible to do it without removing the rocker cover, I mean with just the valve inspection covers removed?

Nick,

Yes I think it is. I almost answered your earlier post, with the following info. but didn't because I was afraid some of the guys would nail me for not being EXACT.

You follow the steps in the page of the manual I posted, but what you do is reach in and grab the rocker you are checking and try to move it back and forth along the shaft it is mounted on. You will feel it move if there is any clearance, and SEE it move if the clearance is much more than a few thousands of an inch. Push on the screw on the end of the shaft while you are trying to move the rocker with the other hand. You will soon see that you can push hard enough on the screw to keep you from moving
the rocker with the other hand. The thing to do is to snug the item 2 screw while you are holding the item 3 screw in hard enough to determine the smallest amount of movement on the rocker arm. Snug it up and then check the amount of rocker movement. If it is what you want, then torque the item 2 screw to 10 nm.

There you are, no feeler gage needed.

Just make sure you only loosen one of the #2 screws at a time. You don't want to break that silicone seal you worked so hard to make between the head cover and the head.

Regards,

Joe
