Yesterday Robbo cracked 7 hours on his bike and 45 on mine, his made the cam chain noise. We did the one click trick fix and it worked perfectly ( no noise ) and checked valve clearances. After the first attempt, plenty of foul language and spilt beer we worked out that you should unbolt the :cuss: radiators first. We measured Robbos exhaust on the tight side of spec ( 0.004 in) and mine ( in and ex ) to be on the loose side, at lest they werent tight :). My question is do the shims cross over with any manufacturer ? They look like CRF style shims to me, I live a very long way from a KTM/Berg dealer and dont want to leave my top end open while I pull, measure and chase shims, shoulda done it last night but I return to work soon and want to get another ride in. Any suggestions would be recived greatfuly. We also measured 08 and 09 oil fliter and found a fly turd difference in them ( overall height ) it is just the circular indent on the base thats different. We have a carton of '08 filters and want to use them in the 09's is there any reason we cant ?
 
if the shim itself isn't the wear surface you can lap it down to get the right thickness with an oilstone or #400 paper on glass

between the 2 bikes there should be enough shims to get them both right

if the filter seals off then go for it
 
What do they measure? I have found that the Harley Davidson V-rod shims(10mm) are the same as my 990 Adventure and they are cheaper + more sizes. Harley parts guy had an attitude until I told him I was putting them in my KTM. Apparently, V-rods are looked down at as there for attorneys and such riding to Starbucks.
 
bushie for truly you are one of the sharpest tools in the shed, ******* me would have purchased a whole pile of shims for nothing!!!! A little extra work but worth it and a perfect excuse for beers and shed time. I'll keep you posted on the oil filter bizzo, the seals are identical, not long untill next service. Tahoecr thanks I also dont live near HD dealers but if I get stuck its good back up. Thanks a lot for your input guys ! :D :D :D
 
Try this, measure your gaps and write them down. Then take out the shims and turn them over and put them back in the exact same spots but with the rockers rubbing on the opposite side of the shim as it was before. measure the gaps again and i will almost guarantee you will find they measure different and are actually looser.

i found this on my bike and what i found is that the shims wear in the centre as that is the area the rocker rubs on leaving the edges at the brand new dimensions. Once you flip them over the worn part will fit onto the valve top basically letting the shim sit over the valve.

When you first check it with the unworn edges the feeler gauge can bridge across the worn part of the shim giving a false reading and noise when running.

Copy that bowser, thinking I should finally invest in a dial guage or perhaps narrow feeler guages? Do manufacturers factor in that bridging effect ?

If you use the search function you will find it but I'll explain it as best as I can. Take a 21mm spanner and crack the tensioner ( lower big nut ) now using your fingers back the tensioner out untill you hear/feel a 'click', re tighten to spec. There are bulk threads on here about it even with links to videos of the noise a slack chain makes.
 
thats a good tip bowser!

i have made valve shims before from drills or lathe tool stock for some weird size i needed in a hurry, in most cases they don't do anything other than take up some space so any hard metal should work.

DO NOT USE THE "08 FILTER !!!!! 8O

it is a different part number for good reason, it cant handle the higher pressure oil system of the '09, it is designed different, only use the '09 one
 
I run 30-40psi in my 08 instead of the 15-25psi stock

have used 3 paper filters since upping the pressure without an issue

would think in very cold climates perhaps it might be a problem

tis good info though ... did you have some fail gazza or is it a tip from europe?
 
Crapola :x Those little buggers are near 20 bucks a hit from the nearest dealer and I tried a large mail order bike parts reatiler in NSW who do the 08 filter @ 10 for 75 shekels but wont play on the 09's. I'm not sure about the stainless ones either surely paper has to retain the real fine stuff better. The service manual rates oil pressure at 58 psi @ 5000 rpm 70 degree coolant temp thats higher than most automotive stuff innit ?
 
hmmmmmmmmm not so bad, just needs a little extra care when cold start/servicing. Would you remove the balancer and rebalance the crank ?
 
i would but i don't know everything :D

the idea of the MMC rod is to reduce the mass of bits that move, so you could also lighten the piston and get a custom Ti pin bout $100US and then yes why not also remove the counterbalancer and lighten the crank by cutting it down to a pork chop around 3 or 3,5kg

you don't need to do anything really but thinking about it keeps the mind busy :oops:
