i just bought the '03 crank(the one with the two big holes) because it is stronger than my old one('04 32mm big end) so i don't know what hc piston to use now, my old piston was an elko. i saw somewhere in here than the '03 piston is a good choice, what is your opinion?
but the cranks are the same? the 2001 to 2004 (inclusive) cranks are all; circular flywheel (360 d), 32mm big end? only in the second year of the new engine = 2005, did they go to the pork chop, short-stroke, 35mm big end crank.
so surely you have bought the same again?
if you have a pork chop crank? you have a 35mm big end. this is the stronger crank. according to the repair manual, they fitted the dished mahle from 2004 onwards which means that for 2004 it was old crank, new cases and new piston.
2001-2002 = 82mm stroke crank, c/w 32mm big end, weaker 134mm c-to-c rod, old flat piston, old cases for SEM ignition. squish is 3 - 3.5mm
2003 = 82mm stroke crank, c/w 32mm big end, weaker rod, weaker 135 c-to-c rod, old flat piston, old cases for SEM ignition. squish is 2 - 2.5mm
2004 = 82mm stroke crank, c/w 32mm big end, weaker rod, mahle dished piston taller by 1.6mm, newer cases with kokusan ignition. squish is close to spot on at 1mm.
2005 - 2008 = 80mm stroke (pork chop) crank, 35mm big end, strong 135 c-to-c rod, mahle dished piston, kok. ign. cases, squish back to 2mm or so (i think!).
there, couldn't make it any clearer!
i have explained the difference in piston heights but perhaps not an approx squish gap. you must check the rod lengths from the tuning section of the doc. you can only get the longer 135mm centre to centre rod for the 32mm big end now as they discontinued the earlier one.
