Hi, My husband bought a nice fe550 and has been having a ton of fun on it, but it recently started stalling. Just DIES while he is riding, but starts right back up. Did this 5 or 6 times today. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

valve clearances or pilot jet blocked but if running fine cols = valve clearances and if awful cold I'd say PJ.

Taffy, Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to say that the bike is running fine and suddenly dies, but will start right back up and runs fine, then dies again and will start back up....over and over! Appreciate any feedback regarding what could be wrong. Thanks

Try killswitch, particularly if it's that stupid combined starter button underneath the push on/ push off switch. They are crap and sometimes earth out over bumps.

try the cheap stuff like a new plug and cap. I have a tool that checks the spark for ignition timing called a strobe or strobe light. by attaching that and watching it flash merrily, at the point of stalling the spark/flash will either stop before the engine or keep going until the engine stops.

what does the plug look like?

Check the gas tank cap and make sure it is venting properly. A poorly venting cap will cause the carb to run out of fuel but then slowly fill up again.

Also the fuel taps may be clogged. If the bike was sitting for a long period of time with regular pump gas in it there is a good chance they are full of gunk. Replacing all of the fuel lines and taps (along with a carb rebuild) may be in order. Pump gas these days is horrible and just clogs everything up if left sitting for awhile. If you will not be riding for a month or so completely drain the fuel from the tank and carb.

I appreciate all the input, but we still haven't figured it out. He adjusted the valves again. The spark plug and cap are fine. It seems like when it gets hot it just dies, but starts right back up, then dies again. Sure would like to figure it out cause this bike is a blast when she runs!

only dies win gets good and warmed up i mean it just dies there no keeping it going either. let sit 3 to 4 min starts right up runs great for a few min then dies again hard to say if its a fuel thing or not. any ideas

looks like alot of work cleaning carb ive cleand a few carbs before to me this one looks like alot more to it and i dont mean the cleaning part. not even sure thats the problem

its electrical as I implied further up. HT breakdown. try and hang the fuel up in the workshop. start it up and turn the lights out at night. see if there's any arcing out. but my suggestion of 'watching a spark' still stands.

my 550 husa all better

damit jim im giveing it all she,s got. cleand the carb most of the day all day to fix stalling wasent carb .and then i saw it a small kink in the fuel line to of them next to exzuast pipe so when bike would warm up the fuel line would collaps then uncollaps letting me start and ride a few more minutes the last owner had fuel line all jack up.and there it was right in front of me: would of like to of seen that be 4 cleand carb:(:p:)

2005 fe550 still stalling

We have changed the ignition coil and voltage regulator. I did not think it was the stator, as it doesn't seem to be losing charge, and we did take it to a shop where they say they tested the stator and it was fine. My husband has adjusted the valves AGAIN, but the bike still stalls when it gets warmed up...let it sit a couple minutes and she starts right back up, only to stall again in a couple minutes....PLEASE, any other suggestions?? Thanks in advance

I'm with Taffy- sounds electrical. When it stalls, is it immediate, like hitting the kill switch, or slower, like running out of fuel?
Is the coil earthed correctly, mounted on clean, NO paint frame mount?
Is plug cap screwed on the high tension lead all the way?
Is the plug that goes onto the ECU/ black box clean, NO corrosion, tight fit? Also all plugs from stator same? Not flopping around, i.e. cable tied to frame? Check every connector!
Earth points from battery clean uncorroded tight?

rikschipp, Yes it is immediate like hitting kill switch. We will check every darn connector, etc asap. By Earth points, do you mean ground? Sorry, I am not that mechanically inclined, just trying to help the hubby figure this out cause we wanna RIDE!! Thanks for any input, it really is appreciated.

Sorry, I forget I have to translate into American- yes, all ground points- the one for the negative on the battery, both ends- battery terminal and frame- check both battery terminals are tight and clean. Other stuff like the fuse in the starter relay- pull out, make sure the connections are clean and tight.
Maybe disconnect the kill button for a ride- it could be bouncing on or shorting to earth.
This sort of stuff is character building- I love the detective work- it was hard to charge customers for it when I worked in shops, though!
