Hi all.
This is my first post and by the way I do love the Husabergs!
Anyway, I was on a trail ride today and everything was going fine when......

I got to about fourth gear and the bike just had no gas, just died right on the spot and refused to budge or start again. It didn't even fire up or sounded like it might.
I checked the gas and yes there was plenty there.
I tried kicking it and it refused to fire up my there was plenty of compression and it wanted to start.
I ended up flattening the battery as you do and unceremoniously got towed back to the pit area.
My ride was over for the day.

A question before I get stuck in and dismantle the bike....
Could my spark plug have anything to do with the bike stopping so suddenly?
It seems to be a fuel starvation problem me thinks but it is only a guess as I thought I had run out of fuel. It didn't cough or anything just sort of died suddenly.

I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to mechanics, I assume when I press the big button it will go and keep going until I hit the other button...lol

I do the basics but this one has flummoxed me.
Can anyone enlighten me out there in Husaberg land please?
Many thanks.

did you check for spark? if so and you saw no spark my bet world be the stator. However, try all the other easy to get at electrical connections first, on both my 98 and 2002, when the stator was going bad the bike would sputter and miss, kind of like running out of gas...

download the hard start guide and follow the instructions, report back and we'll go from there.

Hi and thanks for replying. I do think it is the spark, however, when ushing the starter it makes a whine and then suddenly kicks in. I can't kick start though, so starter or electrics shouldn't be an issue right?
It did splutter and miss when I opened throttle full. Stalled too. This was when I was warming it up

OTTMH for an engine to run you need 4 things.

1 Fuel
If you have fuel in the float bowel then its probably OK, although too much will cause flooding if the needle and seat are not working properly.

2 Air
Blocked air filter/intake

3 Compression
Valves adjusted and no broken springs or seats, or holed pistons, or dodgy decomps

4 Spark
At the right time, so woodruff key needs to be OK locating the rotor on the crank
Stator hasn't come loose and changed timing
Plug not fouled and sparking
CDI generating spark
Plug cap attached to plug

For it to cut out suddenly with no warning I'd first check spark followed by compression. I have seen woodruff keys shear on my old ITs

Steve

Thank you Steve. Yes, I think first I will check the Spark Plug. I hope it is as simple as the fouling...
I know I have compression as the bike kicked back at me when trying to kick it, plus it almost wanted to go each time.

If almost wanting to go implies a spark, then timing might be worth checking - the woodruff key is the little lump of steel that aligns the rotor to the crank. Pull the rotor and you'll know. This is consistent with it just suddenly dying

Steve

Hey Steve, thanks matey, I will do just that. Oh, by the way I have made a donation to this site. I have also bought a brand new 06 450Fe off the floor for $8000 NZD. It has been there awhile but they are getting desperate. It hasn't even been started yet!

Great information by the way. It is always nice to know there are real knowledgeable boffins out there....lol
I will bear this in mind when ever a bike fails on the trail, not just mine!
Cheers

NZberg,

Not to sure if you are on the North or South island but if it is the stator at fault get in contact with Nigel Bevin in Taupo not sure if I have spelt it right but he has some of my ignition stators.
What year is your Berg?.

Sparks.

Haha, that is funny.....I bought the bike from Nigel....
I am approx 3 hours from him....
This is a 2002 Fe470

Being a fair sounding man and seeing as you bought the bike from him you should get a bit of discount assuming it is the stator at fault.

Regards

Sparks.
