The Bad 1st....bike came from dealer with stock DVT needle in the 4th clip, so before starting the much awaited " Gentlemen, start your engines" I decided to check what jetting I was starting with[ 178main, DVT 4th clip, 50p?, FS 1.5 out]...knowing that needle is green and lean I swapped for a DVR that I had in my box all the time questioning the 50 pilot...I buttoned up the carb, got evrything back together and pushed the magic button...NO MAGIC!...turned over but no fire....wet fouled the plug...stripped it down again and replaecd with 40p...buttoned it up again and hit the magic button...NO MAGIC...battery run down...time to work on left foot kick start technique...2nd kick bingo! Fire in the Hole!

THE GOOD...I've been missing the boat for a long time...springs are wromg, six day Michelins don"t work, jetting[ needle] still too lean, and still bike feels fabulous...turns great, suspension feels pretty darn good out the box, and even using break-in discretion with the throttle, this puppy wants to boogie...bike did die on winding switch back and attributed that to a still too lean needle

You'll notice that the motor keeps getting better and better until you have about 20 hours on it. For my 04 550 that's about how long it took for everything to free up, and I kept noticing that the bottom and mid kept improving until then.

According to the "book", the closed course settings are the DVR needle @ pos #6, 178 main, 40 pj @ 2.0 turns out.

Sounds like you are on your way!!

Well quite an initial start or should I say lack of?
Glad you got it sorted out and you were able to get a feel for it.The engine once you get the jetting setup is sure to keep ya grinning.
As far as the stall goes try richening up the fuel screw by half a turn and see how that feels. You'd be surprised what a half a turn either way can produce at times.
Ride it for a good bit before you start trying a lot of major changes be it engine and or suspension wise as you'll most likely find that it takes a bit of time till it fully reveals the good and bad points for your own personal tastes.
Enjoy the ride!

DaleEO..thanks for the encouragement...there's alot more in the motor and the handling yet to be discovered..very cool

vntgmw...I here ya and will try to keep it to a slow roar right now... to tell you the truth I forgot about the fuel screw at the time, but the richer needle was a real kick in the butt...the one variable we have out here in Calif. is the wierd winter gas that's oxygenated and tends to lean things out a bit...but I.'ve got to say whoever it was that said that the 450 was heavy carrying the front wheel had a lean running bike. This thing will hunker down on the back wheel and pull with the front airborne, but real controllable.
