well I bought my first husaberg, i have been riding ktms for alot of years an found a used husaberg cheep. it has a the wrong carburator and backfires on startup. once started it runs great but seam rich. I want to go back to the correct carb and check the valve adjustment. so what carb should be used and how should I jet it for 6000 to 10000 foot elevation. also how do you adjust the valves.

doing the valves can be found in the doc and that is indexed to the left of the opening page.

you need to tell us what carb you have on it and we'll help you them decide if it is just an upgrade or wrong. all dell ortos wear and need refurbishing at intervals with fresh atomiser and needle etc.

try and sort out what you have and what is inside it and report back. I've done a lot of work on these and half the time they are badly treated or worn or worse still = both!

regards

This is where you can find manuals that will cover the bikes of that era. There was not much, if any difference between the '97 and '98 models and the '99s got the reversed ignition but otherwise the motors were mostly the same. Valve adjustment is very simple - find tdc on the compression stroke and set valve clearances at .003" with the set screw/locknut on the rocker arms.

It seems like US FS600 came with an Eldelbrock carb which nobody liked and was a bit weird to adjust.

Thanks for the help, when i took the bike it ran strong and had more power than I could believe. The guy had been playing with the jetting so the backfire could be exess gas left in exhaust but I want to check everthing out so I dont do any damage to the motor. I will look at the carb and figure out what is being used jet size etc. maybe it is fine the way it is and just needs fine tuning. thanks again for the info

hey I pulled the carb off it is a keihi pwk 8ktma-06w. The plug is wet so it is fuel is comming out the exhaust so it is rich. I have a friend who is a carb expert so if you give me the info I need I will take it to him and she should prrrr. thanks for the help

Hi scott

I have a 98FE600 with the original Dellorto PHM40, with that carb I don't know how to help.

I would search for a dellorto or Keihin FCR (more expencive), so you can have some guidence.

It sounds like the problem may be a float needle problem and the carb is flooding out. Check your float/needle combination before you do anything else.

I will check the float needle and see how it works, we got snow today so I'm not in a big hurry to get it running. my friend said the carb I have is better than the factory one but I may get a factory one just in case (found one on ebay). I have torn the bike down and want to start first by checking the valve clearace then check the timing. does anybody know where you can get a dial gage for the spark plug hole to find tdc. I downloaded the manual and have been studying it so hope in time to have everthing working correctly. thanks again for your help

If I remember right, there should be a mark on the case that lines up with one on the flywheel to indicate tdc. I have a dial indicator the was originally bought for timing my dad's 2-stroke Rokon RT340 back in the mid 70's, but I think I had to get another one from Harbor Freight with some longer extensions for use on the newer 4-strokes.

thanks for the info i will go over to harbor freight and pick one up. Then on the flywheel I have not pulled the cover off yet i will have to do that tonight, but isn't that mark used in timing the bike. I was reading an older post on timing and they talked about a mark on he flywheel or magnito to line up to time the bike. I really think my bike is advanced on the timing and that may be why it backfires. That is usually the problem when it backfires on most motors I have worked on. sorry for my ignorance i need to find a shop manual for the bike and get alittle more up on the husabergs.

thanks again

to set the valves, just pull the inspection plates so you can see the adjusters, pull the plug, rotate the engine clockwise using the flywheel nut. (don't use a ratchet) rotate til the intake valves open then close, put something flexible like a tie wrap in the plug hole and rotate slowly til the tie stops rising. adjust the valves to the 1/6 turn out method.
