sorry for your loss :p. been there.
i had forgotten the early engines also have the dots which will align crank/piston with cam, easy realignment if chain stays on. when doing cam/crank align, lobes can be up or down, but if up, you can see if they are level with head.
 
jeebus, are you confusing this old man. based on the pic at the beginning of the thread, i thot you were talking about a 600. i hope i didn't confuse you too much :(
