Dear all Husaberg and KTM Owners,
My name is Justin Recore and I need some information about the reliability and performance of the 2005 KTM EXC 525 and the 2005 Husaberg FE 650E. These are the two bikes I have my mind on but I'm curious about how they perform, which one is the most reliable, capable, and which one is a better deal. I recently heard about the Husabergs, and I also heard that back in the day they were lots of trouble, but since then have now become reliable. I also understand they offer a 1 year warranty with their motorcycles too. I was wondering how well do they enforce the warranty and what it covers. Then I've been hearing that the KTM's have been the number one bikes since 2003 and I have been siding with them, until I heard about the Husabergs. I have been saving for a while and I need to know which bike is better. Thank you very much all KTM and Husaberg owners!

Husaberg's are the best. They perform real good. If you go to KTMtalk, they will tell you KTM is the best and perform real good. :thumbleft:

Well Husabutt, I currently have 1998 WR 250 2-stroke and I have ridden 2-strokes my whole life but I want more torque and a 4-stroke. LIke I said I'm a serious trail rider and I'm wanting either a Husaberg 650 or KTM EXC 525. Thanks for asking

Hi,

sorry, I don´t want to be barefaced, but why do you want
a 650 Husaberg? You mean riding offroad ? single trails?
I think you should take a smaller one.
Or do we talk about a wide/open area you´re riding?
By the way the 650 Husaberg is really a beast compared to the 525 KTM, which is indeed also very strong.
The 650 Husaberg is the strongest enduro motorbike produced in series.
I´m not sure if the most powerful bike is really the fastest.....

But to come back to the task, KTM and Husaberg are both nice bikes.
On a technical scale they´re both on one level. The quality standards are nearly the same and the reliability?
I think everybody will give you a different answer.
Everbody who races has some problems from time to time.
I heard about some transmission or crankshaft failures at KTM, therefore Husaberg had other problems in 2001/2002....
But in most cases it should help when you handle your bike with sense and sensibility. And do some work on her and maintenance her in the right way.

So you have to decide: Is it more the blue/yellow colour or the orange you like?
And maybe you want a bike that´s not propagated that much like the KTM.
So the Berg is maybe the more special bike, everybody will look after you...

best regards
hribman

Jmn349,

Go to the pasted link above as this may help you with one Husaberg riders opinion on the bike lineup.

In my opinion, I would get the 550, (that is what I have) as you will have the best of both worlds. The 550 is a fast reving, rocket that will be just shy of the 650's top speed but quicker. This bike will beat any KTM525 you put it up against granted everything being equal (ie. rider, environment, skills, weight.... you know what I mean) This bike is nimble and has the power and weight to do just about anything you could want to do.

Now, if you are wanting to do some tight technical single track you may want to go with the 450 for better maneuverability but in an overall package the 550 is the bike for me. Trust me, this bike is more than the average rider will ever be able to handle. The manners of all these bikes are excellent whichever one you may choose.

Hope this helps and good luck with your decision making!

Regards,
Keith

P.S. Keep us posted on your decision and what your experience is with your bike of choice. Also remember that there is a wealth of knowledge here on this site that will be extremely useful when time to open up that Beautiful machine we call Husaberg!

Jmn349,

If that was not enough to persuade you remember this as hribman said at the end of his post......

Husaberg is the innovator, not the imitator!

On the trail you and the other 127 KTM owners will be able to talk about what pipe you fitted and the newest graphics out for your bike but the Husaberg will turn heads... Im talking displaced vertebrae here! they will ask questions, Oooo and Aaaa about the engineering design and simplicity, the speed and the power. There is nothing like owning something no one else has...... on second thoughts, get the KTM....(pun intended)

Regards,

The FE450 is plenty of bike for 95.6% of your enduro riding. If you need that extra burst of torque from time to time, the 550 is more than enough. IMHO, most people don't need the 650 unless they ride a lot in the wide open, in the desert or are a hillclimber.

We've been racing a 450 and have had VERY good luck with it. A bit of an overheating hiccup at first, (bad t-stat) but BMG/Husaberg has been MORE than excellent in handling the warranty parts and the bike has had minmal downtime. Parts availabilty is not a problem. They come as fast as UPS can bring them.

To see what we've been up to with the husabergs, check out our website at:

I even have a brand new 450 for sale.

BTW: I've been noticing my fair share of orange bikes being wheeled back to the trailhead lately.

Hey Justin did you ride in Moab with us in March? I remember a Justin riding a 525 and man did he know how to ride it. His dad had a VOR. Was that you?

Thanks for the replies

Hey thanks all for posting on my topic, I guess the FE 650 isn't the best idea. So now I have narrowed it down between The KTM 525/450 or the Husaberg 450/550. And now I'm not the Justin with the 525, I'm the one with the little WR 250 2-stroke. You all have any other words to say about which bike is best. Thanks a bundle you guys are helping me out a lot!

I started ridding bikes when I was about your age and now I am old, slow and fat and on the down side of 50 but........of a all the bikes I have owned or ridden my 2001 FE 501 was by far THE BEST race bike out of the box EVER! PERIOD. That bike would flat walk away from a modified 525 with a equal rider and corner to corner never lost a pull. I am talking about big bore 2 stroke ported KX500 pull without the hit.
Nuf said !

Unless you only ride fire roads, I think any of those big bore bikes will be a mistake. I am twice your age, but a couple of pounds lighter than you, and I ride a 250 4-stroke. I started out on a 501, and that was a mistake. I can go faster and be far less tired on a 250 4-stroke. I say go for a 400cc 4-stroke, max. Unless you are only riding open areas, smaller is better. I am willing to bet that a rider of equal ability to you, on a small bore bike, would smoke you like a fat blunt at Woodstock. I also think that the increased weight and handling detriment of a 4-stroke vs. a lighter 2-stroke, will be disappointing.

I own an 03 FE501E and ride single track in tight woods, single track mountain trails strewn with rocks, and wide open desert. This bike is great at all 3. Would not trade back to a 2 stroke 250 and I have owned plenty. Hit a long straight and my friend with his KTM 300 is eating dust. Come around a tight corner and immediately hit a long uphill and the torque and traction of the big 4 stroke will carry you up where as the little KTM is spun out half way up. Reliability, Have owned 6 Bergs and not grenaded one. My old FE 400 was the closest to a 2 stroke and would work a bit better on the tight single track trails than the 501 but suffered in the desert.
IMHO if you ride lots of single track, opt for the 450, but if you ride in more open terrain the 550 would be my choice.
Dan

PS I liked the motor on my friends KTM 520 and on his new 525, but don't like the handling. Berg is much superior.

I still say a 450.In serious woods riding
anything larger will just wear you out.
Almost all of the GNCC races have been
won by 250 two strokes and 450 4 strokes.
If you can't beat them with a 450 you are
probably not going to beat them with anything
else either.

Froggy,
YOUR 250 was the "yellow pig" remember?
It weighed even more than your berg.
A 250 2st weighs 20lbs less than your berg.
Horsepower can tire you out also.

Horsepower that comes on quick, either because of a rapid increase in HP over a narrow RPM range due to intake/exhaust tuning or a motor with light flywheels wears a person out. My 03 501 is almost as smooth as an electric motor and makes me ride much better than I really am. A 550 is not as smooth as an old 501. Can't say that I have ridden a new 450. My old 400 seriously lacked torque requiring lots of revs, a 470 on the other hand is a nice motor. If the 450 runs like a 470, may be the better choice?
dan

Yeah, the DRZ 250 was a good bike up to the point where I hit technical trails like Sovereign in Moab (and I tried a lot harder than that out here in AZ).

I guess the berg is more fit for my size too. I am not humongously tall (6 feet if even) but the DRZ is made for the ladies and the smaller rider.

Also the lack of ground clearance made it very tiring in the whoops and any jump had to be negociated with care.

I guess in our friend's case, a 450 could be a good choise, as he is riding a 250 2-stroke and he wants to race. A 550 or 650 would put him in the unlimited class. Just a choice he has to make.
