Hi Guys, very new to the berg world, in fact am still yet to own one, that's where you guys come in. Am looking at an 08 FE550, but don't know too much about them.

Are there any common problem areas or things that I should look at before buying? what is the part availability in Victoria (Aus)

also, what's the go with the placement of the hot start and choke?! is there a kit to buy to mount a hot start lever on the bars?

I am looking for something that I can put Motards on also, what wheels fit the berg?

any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Lots of info here for sure, Take a look around, rear a few threads and I am sure all your questions will be answered. I am not familiar with the hot start/choke question but most aftermarket levers have a hot start option available. I am sure warp9 will has lots of motard wheels available. And welcome to UHE

anything from 2003+ from Husaberg and from 2002+ from KTM will fit when talking 'wheels'. they interswop without exception I believe.

the red button is the hot start and is below the black button which is the choke. so you have to be careful on cold mornings!

they don't really have a common fault. little stuff maybe.

the electric start might slip through and not grip but it can be repaired, they tend to make a whiney turbo like noise due to the straight cut gears.

when you kickstart they tend to have full compression but it is all repairable.

the only real fault was that the cranks didn't have enough float across the mains (axially). ask him whether there was anything in the oil at the last change.

The 08 is the best of the pre-70 degree motors in terms of sorting out issues. For a bike with a racing engine, it's pretty stout. I don't own a 550 but a friend of mine believes they were the best of the lot in terms of the balance between reliability and performance. My .02, worth what you paid for it!

Thanks guys, from what I have seen and can tell from the test ride it is a nice bike to ride and will only get better when set up for me, although I have already burnt myself trying to access the hotstart!

Wheels
Front - KTM changed the front spindle size from 20mm to 26mm in 03, so any SX/EXC/SMR fronts will fit straight in from 03>. 625/640/660 LC4 wheel also fits but check the spindle size as some earlier models with smaller spindle were registered later on. 20mm spindle fronts will also fit using a spindle reducer kit from KTM, but factor in the extra expense.

Rear - Any KTM SX/EXC/SMR/LC4 rear from 2000> will fit straight in. Rear spindle size changed in SX/SMR around 2013 (I think) and EXC a year later - easy to get around though, just change the spacers

Note - SX/EXC/SMR rear will need the tyre flipped round if one is fitted (chain on other side). LC4 wheel will have a thicker spacer in the disc side - you can just knock it out and fit your existing one, or buy an SX/EXC/SMR one from KTM. LC4 also use spacers behind front and rear discs - whip them out if fitted (and sell them!)

Duke 2/Duke 1 wheels can also fit. Rear goes straight in, front needs some messing about. Aprilia RS125 wheels can be made to fit fairly easily and are usually much cheaper and easy to find. Poxy sizes though - 3.00" front and 4.00" rear.

2005 - 2007 parts supplier?

Thanks for this good information guys. I have a 2007 FE550 and cannot seem to find any parts for it at any of the big retailers. Every time I search in the drop down menu, 2007 is always omitted from the list--anybody know why? Are there no parts from a 2005 or a 2009 that would work for my 2007?

I am fortunate enough to live close to Offroad Boss, but it's not super convenient. I want to find an online retailer that I can select, click, and pay for my specific bike. I am afraid that just doesn't exist however---curious why the 2005 to 2008 bikes are not as popular.

I recently broke my clutch lever and want to upgrade to unbreakable/breakaway levers for both clutch and brake, but cannot find anybody who can tell me an exact fit replacement.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

everything on a 2008 fits yours. I do everything but I don't call it 2007 either. just a name and the oem part number.

You can get all genuine parts through husqvarna dealers
I just got genuine sticker kit for my 2007 550.

2008 is the best year mechanically the but 2005-2008 are the best of them before the 70 degree. Just be over the top with your airfilter and oill and change them all the time and make sure you locktite all the nuts and no problens

Clutch lever best option is the clever lever from midwest mountain engineering.
I think they make a brake lever also.

When tuned/jetted properly, you won't really need the hot start. Really though, even after a drop, my 550 and 650 always fired without it after about 5 seconds of cranking.

IMO, it's not really worth moving it to the handlebars.
