Hi guys,
I have an 04 fe550 45hrs on it, last 4 hours of riding has slowly developed engine noise, just inspected top end and all is like new.Found auto deccompresion shaft and counter weight to have a reasonable amount of movement and play in it, dont think that is causing noise, is that right to have small amount of play there?
At 40 hrs found small 1mm shaving of aluminium on oil screen and tiny shavings on magnetic plug. However this is second 04 550 and same shavings etc. were found until it passed 50 hr mark.
If anyone has any idea as to where to start looking I would be greatful, or has had simular problem.First 04 got 8000kms no trouble.Bike runs fine and have rechecked valve clearances and noise is still there......

developing engine noise

The noise that was slowly developing was appearingly from the top end, however after inspection of the top,it was like new.

After reading your reply and consulting a fellow berg owner that had the same problem I went directly into the clutch housing side and could undo the nut on the end of the crank with my fingers......
There wasnt a bit of thread lock to be found on those components.
Will clean up and apply thread lock.
Just wondering if nut on end of counter balence shaft will come loose as well. May have to carry out same check.
Bike was early 04 and not all had this problem as I have been led to beleive.First 04 I had touched 8000kms no problems, thats why I went another.

Thanks for the input and answering the reply. A noise like that usually costs heaps..............

RE: developing engine noise

You may want to check but I think the torque setting for that is 100 foot pounds.

RE: developing engine noise

The loose nut only occured on late 04 and early 05 550s I have seen no other significant issues.

The 04 owners manual lists 110Nm which is 81.2 ft lb
