What a time to kick the bucket, just as the weather is warming up.

Problem:

I was out for a spirited ride on saturday, after a really enjoyable spell on the twisties and losing two mates on sportsbikes I slowed to take in the scenery and let them catch up. I noticed the engine on the kicker side sounded a little louder than usual, like something a possibly a bit loose. No lose of torque/power and idling as normal so I decided I was going to fill up then limp home.
After stopping at the petrol station it refused to start again. My bike has been a good starter, 3kicks from cold and 1-2 when hot. I kicked for 15 minutes with little success, sometimes there was nothing and sometimes it seemed to want to go. When my mate decided to try, somehow the kicker locked in the top position and wouldn't budge. We dropped it into gear and managed to turn the engine and it free'd off the problem. I then kicked a few times and it started, I was relieved being 30miles from home.

However.... after a couple of seconds the engine seemed to react badly inside cutting it dead. Now the kicker just seems to spin internally, not engaging anything. I will start stripping the bike tomorrow. I'm a confident mechanic but I'm wary as this will be my first venture into the bergs internals.

Thanks for reading my post, any comments/thoughts welcome.

Don't worry Dan, theres nothing too scary inside the left hand cover of a Berg................ if in doubt just sacrifice a smalll mammal and drip its blood over the casing before you open it!!

Hope theres nothing too wrong with it.

Thanks for the quick replies. Loving the links too as it seems like it could be a quick fix...touch wood.

Dan

Opened up the casing today after work, nothing jumped out at me or fell out in the oil so I was feeling ok.

Can anyone see a problem??? 8O

I thought there was nothing scary in the left hand side :eep:

I'm gutted, next step will be to get the lump out and strip it right back and see how much I can salvage. I'm guessing I'll keep what I can then send the rest off for a full rebuild. I'm getting married in 5weeks so money is mega tight. I can't see it getting back on the road anytime soon.

Jesus Dan............ thats scary.............. your getting married!!!!
No that looks real scary having your cam chain out over there the wrong side of the clutch!
Fingers crossed for you that its not too bad a repair........... and good luck in a few weeks.

carl

The chain wasn't there when I opened the cover, I just draped it across for effect. I'm feeling ok about it now as I'm through the first bottle of wine...

There should be a haynes manual for bergs and discount trading stores offering good deals on parts. We are in a recession while trying to maintain our berg fix, its hard. I wonder if I can convince my future wife to list berg parts on the wedding list, hmmm.

Dan

Good luck with that list Dan,

Toasters and crockery from John Lewis,
Bearings and Cam Chains from Dave Clarke Racing!
