I have finally got around to installing a FCR MX carby off a 02 WRF250 onto my 03 FE400 and I will not look back, it is just so much more responsive, smoother and more predictable and along with the rekluse clutch just fitted man I am excited. If you have been putting this off as I did then procrastinate no more. Just do it.
I won't say my jetting is perfect but I fitted the carby as stock from the WRF and went for a spin, up to about 2/3 throttle was good but it was blubbery up top. I changed the main jet from a 165 to a 158 and it was a little better, I then lowered the needle one clip and bluberyiness gone yeeehaaa. I still have a very slight hesitation if snapping the throttle open real quick at about 1/4 throttle so thinking I may need a smaller pilot air jet or something else.
I have a 38mm delorto with lots of new bits in it for sale send me a PM.

Nice work. I have a 39mm FCR waiting for me in the shed.

What mods did you need to do? What cable did you use?

Mine has a modified inlet spogot (i think) and came off a berg 450 (i think) and also has adjustable pilot screw, after market pump cover, modified fuel inlet (left to right) and a powernow plate. With all this I reckon it's good to go with a bit of jetting work.

Current jets etc are;
needle - OCEM S
Needle clip - 3 of 7 from the bottom
Needle jet - ? no markings
Main jet - 178
Pilot jet - 70

Any one care to comment on these jets / needle for a 400? I'm guessing theyre a bit rich.

Any one tried the powernow thing? Comments?

The inlet rubber usually needs about 5 -10mm cutting off it ( I found a shorter one and fitted that instead). The bleed nipple on the bottom of float bowl had to be completely removed so as not to fowl on the starter motor and depending on which carb you get the air inlet may either need to be made larger in diameter or replacing with a berg unit. I did it by cutting the rear bell off an old mikuni and having the inside machined so that it fitted snugly over the original mouth on the back of the carby using a thin oring and some sicaflex to secure it real tight. As for getting the carby in and out I think it is easier than the delorto to remove just loosen the clamps and cables pull it back twist it to the side and out it comes. I used the original WRF250 throttle assy and cables which are longer than the Bergs so they tuck in behind the headlight around the lhs of the frame then cross over the top of the head to connect onto the rhs of the carb. It's a bit of stuffing about but well worth it.
Cheers Dan
P.S your carb in the pic is probably a lot easier to fit than the FCR MX carb that I used.

Thanks for the info Dan. Good inspiration to get on with it. I'm off to the yammy dealer for a cable.

Taffy you're right of course.

Powernow anyone?

Hey I just worked out my carb is a 37 not a 39 !!! I always measured them inside the very front of the carb which is 39 but apparently they should be measured inside near the slide which is 37. Go figure it still works well apart from being a bit rich on the bottom. I dropped the pj from a 45 to a 38 but can still wind the mixture screw right in without the motor dying. The paj is 75 which probably doesn't help. Will try a 35 pj soon.
Cheers Dan

p.s will a 39 make much difference apart from top end ?

no it won't.

if the screw can go all the way in it's probably because yo haven't installed the needle you've been told to. get the needle right. the PS/PAJ combo is spot in. if you green lane get the "D" (DMS) series recommended. get a 8SJfrm yamaha - the 70 is too small.

Taffy

Taffy I am guessing that when you say green lane you mean ride in the scrub which is a yes - mostly . What dms needle do you recomend ? Not sure what you mean by a 8SJfrm yamaha the 70 is too small ??

I have read elsewhere in the fuel forum about people have an adjustable PAS which sounds like a pilot air screw , is this something fitted aftermaket or do they mean the pilot screw as it is a fuel mixture screw not a air mixture screw.
Regards Dan

yes i'd recommend a PAS over a PAJ. it costs twice as much but it's worth it. typo: you have a 70starter jet and need an 80. the 85 is for racers.

the DMS needle is a keihin original.

Well I finally did it. I got the carb fitted today and the bike started first kick and ran sweetly with no apparent problems on a short road test. Boy I didn't expect that! It even started on the button which it's never done. I'm pretty stoked to get out for a ride now. Just fitted rebuilt suspension and new 48 front springs too. Woo Hoo!

I found a NCVY needle in a batch of parts I bought in yesterday so fitted that to the FE400 with clip in No 4 (middle) position just to see how it was. Mixture screw was good at around 1 turn out and motor starts to hunt if less than 1/2 a turn out and goes rich past 1.5 turns out. It feels nice and snappy down low but not quiet as good up top, old needle was a ELP C6. I still have a real noticeable flat spot between 1/8 to 1/4 throttle when accerlating quickly which is slightly worse than with the ELP needle on clip 6. It just falls on its face momentarily and then off again. I have not yet changed the accelator pump timing as per doc, could this be the cause of my flat spot ?? Taffy ?
Current jetting Main 152, Pilot 38, Pilot air jet 75, Needle NCVY C4.
Cheers Dan

raise the needle once?

get the best needle clip position, we'll know a lot more then....

Taffy I lifted the needle all the way and now it runs with almost no flat spot. You get a very slight flat spot if snapping the throttle open from idle. I have been studying a keihin manual and it looks to me like I a need a needle with a smaller straight diametre and possibly a shorter straight. Keep in mind my old ELP needle was on C6 and still had a flat spot only slightly more than what I have now with NCVY on C7.

Hi Dan,

Try a CVS needle on clip 3, this works good for me and a few other guys on here.

Sparks.

i didn't think they did a NCVY? if they do i need to be taught the codes for it? can you check the needle again please. look specifically at the letter 'Y' on the end?

suggest you get a 145MJ asap and drop the needle to C4/5. in the meantime, forget hesitancy on the paddock stand and if you get it in the scrub it can be adjusted out on the PS underneath easily. get the accelerator pump sorted.

regards

Taffy
