Hey guys and gals, i'm looking into buying a 1999 FE400. I'm new to berg's so i don't know what i should look for in these bikes. If anyone can tell me things to look out for and what are the problems with this yr of bike would be awesome.

Thanks for the response
Kenny

hi kenny,
welcome to uhe. the 99 fe400 is generally a solid bike with few issues. if the fe400e with elec start, it will have a counterbalancer that on occasion causes problems. it will sound louder than the fe400 without it. the kickstart and the estart model bothhave the sem ignition that periodically eats stators (expensive fix). wouldn't hurt to pull the mag cover to see if things look clean, not corroded. all the dellorto carbs tended to wear the needle and needle jet which made them run poorly at 1/4 throttle and above, especially at throttle changes. (easy fix). other issues are the same as any used dirt bike. mostly these bikes give you alot of bang per buck.

nothin' gets by you, ron.
i entered the blackberg in the ariz motorcycle racing assn (AMRA) at the sheridan mountain desert scramble(more mountain than desert) and put a whoopin on the old guys class. (granted there were only 2 of em). but i also kicked the butts of the 2 guys i normally follow around when we trail ride by 10 and 14 minutes respectively
i'm lovin this 450 8) 8)

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me what mean by "expensive fix" for the stator, price wise, i'm in Canada.
Thanks Keny

Ned, You always bring a smile to my face ! You gotta be the fastest white guy over sixty. Where can I get AMRA race info ? might like to hook up and give it a go haven't raced in years, but a couple of guys up here want to check it out. You remember Josh and big Tom from Moab (hopeless Honda boys)? They think they want to race a bit. I think they've watched Dust to Glory too many times !

kenny,
the 99 has the stator mounted on the inside of the cover as opposed to the case inside the rotor. generally the berg replacement part consists of a set of rotor/stator. i've never replaced a set, always used just a stator (same as earlier ktm) at about $175 us. the sem threads from sparks will tell you everything you ever wanted to know.

Ned, Are you going to the race at Monticello ? If you want to come up early you are welcome at my place . We got extra room. Maybe we can get Seth and Candie out of that Flagstaff enclave ?
