I have an 02 fx470e. Lately when I push the e start button, the bike does not turn over. Rather, the starter just whines like it is just spinning and the motor does not turn over. If I let off of the button, then re-push it, the motor will start to turn over again. I think the starter is bad. Does anyone have any ideas? Also, if the starter is bad, how much is a new one? Would it be easier and more cost efficient to just take off the electric start system all together.

Sounds like its time for a new starter sprag clutch.

You might check the auto-decompression device on the cam and your valve adjustment first. Do a search and you will find what you need.

I have a 02 Fx470e in my used inventory, this what we did to make it start off the button .You need to use a longer duration camshaft to lower intake vacumn resulting in less air in the cylinder at cranking speeds. Its like magic... starts off the button easy.

i'd go an check the sprag clutch first before checking anything else. if as you say the starter motor is just spinning that is the most likely cause.
what buck and nsman are saying will help to get the motor started once its turning over.

hey besides the button problem you have shootinmanbwh what opinions can you guys give me on a used 02 FX470 like i said in another post i just need a newer berg

Hi Nsman:

Mberg501, I have an 02 470 as well, and I picked it up two years ago or so. I have done the motor upgrades (cam chain and sprocket, rocker arms, 05 cam, counter balancer), and other than one major catastrophe which was my fault, the bike has performed very well, it does not have e-start anymore, but fires off on the kickstart very well, and I like the bike so much that I can not justify buying a new one. I have only one complaint, that would be getting the oil leak at the water pump stopped, which really is a minor thing. If you could find an 01-03 that has already had the upgrades in the $2000-$2500 range, you will not be disappointed.

Bendberg, I know what your saying i love my 98 FC501 that i bought brndnew in 98, no kids then, and have been ridding it ever since. I think that by owning that one makes me a pretty loyal fan. I just want to get somthing newer since its getting hard to find parts for it. so you say 2-2500 what about 2695 + taxes too much?

Depends on the condition.Sounds like the one Dan has advertised if so he's a straight shooter, just ask him about the upgrades it has.
I had an '02 FC470 which is virtually the same bike less electric start & 18" rear wheel & I loved it.Handled nice & gave me good service & as you can see from the doc much is known about them & what to keep on top of or upgrade.
Good luck.
