Water shaft seal (another one!!)

Hi all
Got a 2002 FE650 that started getting a lot of oil coolant in the engine oil. Thinking I should replace the water shaft seal (maybe one of those fancy jobs Taffmeister has?). I was surprised when I took the clutch cover off, and there was another seal on the inside! Look at the pics to see what I'm talking about.
Does that seal really belong on the bearing thats on the shaft rather than on the clutch cover? It was covering the weep hole where it was sitting in the clutch cover...
Mucho grateful for your help gents!

A black seal...a standard rubber seal is no good, it can't grip the housing. you need the proper metal-backed seal. The fancy bearing is that of Orangeberg in Australia and good luck with that!

yes, that seal does belong in the polyamide bearing. I found that a 1mm electrical screwdriver and clamping the seal against the bearing in the vice was the best way and then just go round picking the seal into the bearing.

if all that fails, we do a "last chance" kit and in it is a;
w/p seal. we encourage this to be put on the outside edge so the impellor is virtually sitting on it.

the shaft o ring

the sidecover o ring

the w/p gasket

a new, thicker, sidecover gasket. this makes the seal sit on a fresh part of the shaft.

A NEW POLYAMIDE BEARING. this is because my theory is that with a worn bearing the shaft quivers off centre and the seal can't maintain contact with the shaft.

two copper washers. these are to go behind the sledge plate and bring it out so the sledge key can't fall off the plate edge.

I had a look at my water pump shaft, and scoured the parts manual and it doesn't look like there is supposed to be an o-ring on the water pump shaft? I've got an -02 FE650, did the o-ring on the water pump shaft come in after that?

I pushed the seal back on the bearing with the shaft still in the bike. It sort of clicked back into place. I suspect that it will slip back out though? As this is what it did last time? I suspect a reason why I had so much coolant in the engine oil is because the weep hole was covered by this seal, so the coolant went straight in instead of coming out the weep hole?

page 30 of the 2002 manual. item 12 is an O ring.

the bearing and seal should be fixed off the bike in the vice using a 1-2mm electrical screwdriver. then pressed into the cover in a forward motion with no reversing and trying again.

the waterpump seal must be the factory w/p seal and from the outside you must see the back of it, to see the spring. it must be flush with the cover and MUST NEVER be pressed in so far that it touches the rubber seal on the bearing you only just pressed in from the other side.

You can only put a factory w/p seal in by pressing it in with a vice or press - you can't hit it.
