I might be missing something but I cannot work out how to check the chain tension according to the manual.....it seems a little foggy to me - can someone interpret for me? I've checked other chains from the middle under the swing arm, or from the top of the swing arm - but never as described in the manual.

When I first got my bike I took it apart. I know, that's a thing I do with new (to me) things.
Anyway, I took out the rear shock, jacked up the rear wheel until the counter shaft, swing arm bolt, and rear axle were all in line, then I set the chain to be just less than taught in that position.
If you follow that set up, then once you put your shock back in and set the bike on the side stand you can measure the play and remember that number for future adjustment.

Otherwise, just space it at least three fingers below the swing arm and ride it. Your're over thinking it.
 
Just don't do what a previous owner of my 600 did and fit a 53t rear sprocket so the chain is piano wire tight with the adjusters all the way in
 
I really didn't think I would have to remove the shock I order to check or adjust the chain tension...! Can someone please just translate the manuals guidance? Do I push the chain up against the guide first then check the clearance by pushing again...???
 
Refers to the MINIMUM distance between chain and swingarm. Regardless of the size of the crown, the minimum distance point is approximately 1 link after the end of the chain slide. Discreet pressure must be applied to obtain the correct reading, a cause of the chain weight and friction. I believe this method is fast and effective

On my 2010 FE450 the manual instructs to measure from the BOTTOM of the swing arm while supported on a stand and the top chain being tight. You want an 8-10mm gap. The chain will appear more slack than a standard japanese linkage bike. I originally set the tension with my old standard of +3 fingers on the top of the swing arm and removed the shock to confirm. The chain would get way too tight at this setting when cycling through the travel.
