2001 501FE cam chain timing

I have searched and searched and have not been able to find out how to time this motor once it has been disassembled. I dropped a valve and after head work etc I'm ready to reassemble. this is my first Husaberg and can't find any timing marks to help me. My concern is the balancer? I had to replace the lower timing chain gear because of a broken tooth. any help or pictures of how to make sure I put this back together timed correctly would be very much appreciated.

stand by, i will upload a pic to explain myself better, just may take a minute......
 
so the pic i upladed is not correct, just using it as a reference was a photo i had stored....

1st, set the crankshaft to top dead center

2nd, turn the cam so both lobes are down and camshaft bolt is 90 degrees in relation to the cylinder head

3rd, attach timing chain

4th, rotate engine 2 revolutions and make sure that the cam is still 90 degrees to cylinder head

so my concern was to make sure the lower cam chain gear is in the correct position also.
how do I line this up?
 
sorry for the delay had a someone at the door,

to line up the bottom camchain sproket you just set the piston position to top dead center and the bottom is lined up, the cam sproket is held on with a woodruff key and lines itself up to the correct position at tdc. then line it to the top end.

to get the cam sproket onto the crankshaft, set your woodruff key in place, heat the sproket to 200 degrees celcius with a torch and drop it onto the shaft and tap it with a socket over the shaft and a hammer to seat it, if hot enough will fall into place pretty much....then line up the cam as described and instal the chain...the open end of the link should be facing opposite direction from the engine rotation and a dab of silicone on the open end of the link to secure it-per owner manual. then rotate it 2- or 4 or 6 revolutions and recheck you piston top dead center with the 90 degree of the camshaft bolt to head relationship.

note: my previous picture of the cam is not 90 degrees, it was just a reference so you can better imagine how to aligne it, that pic was taken previously for another post i think...

i wonder if the 600 is different than the 501fe the lower cam gear is not ran off of the crank and I have disassembled clutch oil pump etc on the left side so the cam gear does not move. i had to replace the lower gear due to a missing tooth. so i need to figure out where that key needs to be in relation to everything else.

ok nevermind back for now, hhhhm i thought they were the same,

the woodruff key i was talking about is under the cam gear, the outer sproket that touches the clutch (which i think is the one you replaced called the primaty gear) is just outside the cam sproket and held on with the large nut. i think the inside of the clutch there is a smaller sproket that turns the oil pump and also ties in with the kickstarter.

the primary gear has no marks, it just has to spline with the clutch out ring gear. the primary gear goes onto the tapered end of crankshaft untill it bottoms out, then you torque the promary gear nut to 80nm. just make sure that if the inside of the gear is tapered, the angle between the inside of the gear matches the cranksahft taper, i dont remember if its tapered or not, i was reinstalling the original gear and just lined up the 'witness' mark from how it was installed originally
 
so basically that sproket has no key just aligns with the clutch and is held in place by the torque of the nut against the tapered shaft
 
or maybe yours is different than mine, i did not think so but i havent worked on one myself to know either, i am pretty sure that your lower cam sproket is on the crankshaft, otherwise would the cam chain connect to top and bottom of the engine? :D i beielive the gear you are talking about lining up also goes on the crankshaft :cheers:
 
the balancer is inside the engine cases in front of the crankshaft, not in the left side of engine where you describe, it does have marks to align it to the crankshaft and pictures are in the owners doc for that alignment, but if you didnt split the cases then the balancer is not the part you put in....
 
I will take a pic and try to upload.
The gear i replaced is the lower cam chain gear it runs off the same shaft as the water pump impeller.
 
do you have a picture or diagram of what you are explaining? on the 501 it seems to be critical to line up the timing chain gear, crank gear and clutch basket gear. Do i have this correct? when replacing the lower cam gear there are more than on place to put the woodruff key, i do not know if this makes a difference the key seems to line up with the tooth. I'm trying to figure out how to download a picture.

what do you mean by the doc?

I have one of the motors that did not come with any marks on any of the gears like the later models.
So I have no idea how to line up the primary gear on the crank to the primary gear on the balancer.
I was hoping someone would have an idea of what to do.

The crank primary gear on the bottom and the gear above it is for the balancer drive gear they are connected by the clutch basket. my motor does not have any marks on either gear to line them up like they do in the later years.
If anyone has an idea on how to line this up that would be great.
 
ok your engine is different you can just disreguard everything i have said till now, check the owners doc under the "Engine strip and rebuld" section i think i saw them in there.....
 
I will see what I can find, I did not have any luck before which is why i was reaching out. maybe it is under a different heading.

Have you searched for a service manual?

google search for '2001 husaberg 501 workshop manual', i couldnt find any free ones but didnt search really hard either, multiple places will email you a manual for $10.00 or less

I have googled etc talked to mechanics etc. i have a few service manuals and they all just talk about lining up marks.
The Husaberg mechanic tell me that it is not something they can explain over the phone but yes indeed there were some that did not come with timing marks but there was a diagram on how to do it but no one seems to be able to find it. I will contact another dealer and see if I have the option of buying new gears that have marks on them and maybe that will be the answer,
Where in the site did you look at pictures to determine they are different?
