Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew if a earlier ktm or husqvarna or other speedometer drive gear that would work on my 1997 berg. i am having poor luck finding a used one and would gladly pay for a new one (or used from something) if i knew what might fit my axle. I drive on the road alot and live i a hilly, twisty area so watching my digital tach is ok at times but mostly is not since it is always fluctuating and not a true reading unless engine speed is constant and it usually isnt due to hills/corners. i run a high gear ratio on the road to keep the revs down but that leaves a ton of room in the power band to easily go over the 55mph limit and i have been finding myself catching up to the guy in front of me a lot lately which tells me that i am going too fast, unless i am just repeatedly catching up to the one slow polk sunday driver  I just want to get this fixed before i get a ticket or piss someone else off by going too slow myself

Are you saying you watch your digital tach to get an idea of your speed?
I'd go with a digital speedometer before going with the old cable driven system. The mph numbers don't fluctuate nearly as much as rpm numbers and would certainly take the guessing game of your actual speed.

LoL, for the moment yes. at times around 60mph when accelerating, the speed will jump around so i can see when i get to 60 then i just try to hold it around there.
I know the digital computer systems are an option, i guess i am just old fashion and i like my speedometer with a needle. it came with the cable powered speedo setup already so if i had a drive it would be good to go again, i attached a drill to the cable down by the drive and was able to see the speedometer needle rise nice and smooth so i know the drive unit is bad, not the cable or speedometer.

thanks anyway for the idea, hopefully i can find something or else i will have to go that route. just a month ago there was two of the things on ebay for 10$each or something, two weeks later when mine quit they were both gone! curse the luck!

i have just had to fit a digital speedo as my clocks on my fs 650 vibrated themselves to bits and like you i cant ride a bike without knowing my speed , one good thing with the digital display ive got a temperature gauge now and also a clock

I used a digital bicycle computer on my '96 FE501 that I owned years ago - epoxied the magnet to the hub near the brake rotor and zip tied the pickup and wire to the front brake line. There is an aftermarket digital unit on the market (Panorama?) that I've seen used to replace the digital KTM units which the later 'Bergs also use.

Bergini,
I have a brand new gear drive that ran the stock odo for my 02 FE501. I immediately took it off the bike and put on a Trailtech Panoram when the bike was new. It did not have a speedo so I'm not sure if it would be the correct set-up. It fits a 22mm axle and the width is 32mm. I'll make you a good deal if you think it'll work.

Thanks for the replies everyone, i was thinking about a bicycle trip meter for the short term but didnt want to spend the cash and then find a drive and have it go to waste.

an engine temp guage would be nice to have....... does anybody have an opinion about the coolant temp sensors like trailtech has that is just a little digital readout display with a probe that goeas around the spark plug or cylinder head bolt? are they accurate? maybe all the more common trailtech guage setups are like that too?

logjump,
i will take some measurements and send you a pm, i am quite sure i have the 22mm axle, do you mean 32mm diameter? maybe 10mm wide? i will let you know my dimensions.......

The 32mm is the width the drive takes up between the fork leg and wheel hub. When I removed the drive, I had to put a spacer in its place that was 32mm wide with a 22mm i.d. hole in it.

hhhhm....i have a husqvarna speedometer, i assumed my drive was still a husaberg part, i wonder if it was also trasfered with the husky speedo, my drive is about 15mm wide fits 22mm axle, and there is about a 15mm spacer that fits beside it....anybody know what the original drive looked like that would have come on the 1997 bikes? the original owner said it came with a ktm trip meter, not an actual speedometer. thats why he fit the husky part because he had it. (not sure if i beleive him because i can see a real speedo in the crappy pictures of the printed 1997 husaberg owners manual but thats another story)

could i trouble you for a picture of the drive you have? particularly where the cable threads on? actually ill take some pictures later on and off bike and post back with them, then i can get real actual measurments instead of guessing too.

thanks,
bergini

The crappy pictures in the owner's manual are ones of an european model. The US models did not come with speedometers. I do know that the '96 models did not even have a trip meter and I looked into getting one for my FE501 but didn't feel like spending the money for the parts when I could use a $30 bicycle computer and calibrate it exactly for my wheel size.

I guess that makes me feel a little better about the trip meter thing, I took some measurements and it is way off from what i thought, i have some pictures attached. i dont know if your gear will work logjump, unless this isnt the factory spacer or drive, i do seem to i have to hold the forks together some to take up all the slack before i thighten down the axle bolts, maybe yours would fit? is this considered a 22mm alxe???

Oops, I made a mistake. The I.D. for the axle is 20mm. I kinda thinking it won't work because it looks like yours is driven externally and this one is driven by mating up to internal tabs within the hub. Maybe with some ingenuity???

Logjump,
thanks for the great pictures, it would probably take more ingenuity than its worth, my axle id is only 16.5, if it was only up to the two tabs being different and the width being different i would try it, but with the axle being too small to fit the hole it along with everything else it just seems too different to be worth it, i really appreciate all the time you have taken to help out, guess its back to the drawing board......if i wasnt such a picky cheap ******* i'd have a digital unit on here already :D

I like seeing a needle to show speed rather than a digital number as well, so I understand your dilemma. A friend was going to get all digital gauges for his 66' Malibu and I came very close to slapping him upside the head! He stayed with the stock set-up. :D
Hope you get something figured out.
