Hi from New Zealand,Iv recently purchased a 2001 550 fc,apparently its had the fe wiring loom put in it and electric start etc, anyhow the stator crapped itself on the old owner,he brought what is apparently a rewired stator from overseas and installed it,(it actually has 470 fe written on it with felt pen)but i am figuring this is the same unit as the 550?So the old owner has installed stator and tryed to get the bike going,(it hasnt been run for 12 months, but was running when stator stuffed out)but no luck, now Im the lucky owner(maybe)so iv had a look over everything, looks like it should, have a very weak spark and the bike wont kick over, decided to jump start it down the hill and it fired up,idoling a little high, but other than that sounded nice,no splutters or coughs, let it warm up a little and went for a short burst, shut it off and still couldnt kick it over,Im a little concerned that the problem may be bigger than I thought, dos anybody have any advice?cant wait to hit the trails on this machine!!cheers

Hi

You can have one FE or FC (I call it half stator) stator, check the wires that come out of it. And if you have one FC stator check if you have the spacer inside, if not can be the problem.

Apart from everything that can be worn in your bike, the stator is part of the problem since you can jump start it and not start by kick. Its a usual problem since the stator has a very weak spark when you kick it (low revs) and when you can make higher revs (jump start) the stator starts to gain more power.

Go to owners docs and check the resistances of the stator and go from there.

Zaga just had a spacer off me so he can supply dimensions and a photo. thanks for volunteering Zaga!

great stuff, thanks guys,i havnt noticed a spacer,im pretty sure its a FE stator, will double check tomorrow and get back to you,any help would be great thanks zaga, cheers

Hi,Iv adde a couple of photos which i hope will help, there is no spacer and the stator has fe 400 written on it,cheers

Oh,this will sound silly, but i forgot to mention that the stator has no marks on it,so cannot set the timing when at tdc,any ideas?its just set up as close to what i imagine it would be according to where the wires sit.

The flywheel has the marks on it. The stator has none. The marks line up with the upper stator cover bolt hole. There is a lot of info in "the owners doc" . All the stators should be interchangeable from 01-03. Possibly earlier.

Hi Hus,

From looking at the photos the stator you have is not a 1999 / 2003, I can tell this from being able to see the lighting coils at the back of the stator, plus there is no timing mark on the back. Also so the sealing grommet looks to be round not elongated like it should be for the year in question.
This type of stator was designed to be fitted to the engine not the cover.

The resistance figures you will see on this stator is Black/ Red 1750 and Black/Green 23 Ohms.

Regards

Sparks.

Steve beat me too it.

that is a stator from 1997 or before putting out the wrong ampage and therefore unable to do its job right.

I've dozens of those little grommets. not sure I want to swop a Mk1 for a Mk3 but whether you use Sparks or I to get it done it CAN be converted and upgraded at the same time.

as far as Berger's photo goes well i would say that the standard flywheel marks were superceded about 8 years ago but news travels real slow to Arizona. hopefully you'll see photos of a flywheel with a white line tipp-ex'd on it in the Doc and THAT is what you need.

you do have the deep - FE flywheel BTW.

Yes your stator is the first one, I'm sure, no good for you !

And your flywheel with very little health !!!

Just maybe, you shoud think of buying a new set, it comes fly and stator together, .. not sheap !

Good luck

Hi All,well thank you, although its not a quick fix,its really good to know that I have the wrong stator,I will get it tested and have already been in touch with the previous owner who was a bit surprised to find out that he had purchased the wrong stator,we will be making contact with the seller (of the stator)and hopefully can do an exchange,if not I will definatly be looking at other options as I really like the style of this bike,my last bike (99 ktm 380)was stolen over a year ago and its been a long enough wait already,Yes zaga the flywheel is a bit rough,it will be a toss up between saving up for new or taking a gamble on just the stator,I will let everybody know how I get on,thank you once again for your help,Taffy I could be interested in sending away, although im not sure on cost etc,bit of a headache living down here in New Zealand, not a lot of husabergs about, but they have a great name here, ktm is really popular, anyway, enough rambling, cheers guys, great site!!!!

Out of intrest,if the stators are universal (as in 470s 550s etc) are the flywheels the same?so could i purchase a flywheel off a 2001 470 and it will be the same?Theres a guy here who has stripped down a 470 and its got plenty of nice parts(not the stator of course)but also, are the petrol tank seat etc the same as the 550s,they look very similar, cheers

Taffy,Iv just found what I asume is your website 'Taffmeisters' I can see that i will be more than likely being in touch about a rewound stator, all I can say is please may I exchange my mark 1 for a mark 2?haha,I really cant imagine im going to find a decent stator here and obviously its better to have a rewound one, makes sense to me,I will be getting the origonal stator that was in the bike and I will also either have the stator i have now,or the replacement to exchange, perhaps you could do me the flywheel package?just a thought, cheers

hope im not asking to many questions here, but im a little confused,if i have the FE flywheel, then is my bike actually a fc550 with a flywheel and electrics conversion,or is it something else?can anybody tell by the photo etc?Iv been trying to figure it out over the net (owners doc etc)I cant figure it out, everthing tells me its a fc550,if the fc only has 3 wires coming off the stator, would they have changed the flywheel to suit the fe stator maybe? ,the serial number on the frame is yu7fc5k3910000121 :?

The FC's had a smaller/lighter flywheel. Even though FC's have no lights, they still have the lighting coils. They just used the same stator for all the models.
As far as the motor goes, what does the engine number say right above the flywheel (just out of sight on your first photo).

Hi berger, the only number i could find is on the flywheel? its 101 801 05 a1 ,if thats not the right number il go have another look, cheers

There should be an engine serial number stamped on the cases about 3" above the top stator cover bolt hole.

Hi

Don't be confused about the flywheel and stator because there are out there owners that makes a lot of stupid changes. I have in my garage one fx 470 that usualy has the same stator and fly as the fe, but that one has one that I call "half stator" and the small flywheel.

So try to look for other diferences to ID your bike.

Just to add some reference data... I have an "early" 2002 FC550, and it came with the full flywheel and lighting coils on it. The wires for the lighting coil were never connected, but they were in the harness. I simply connected a regulator, rectifier and a battery, now I have e-start, lights, horn... all the stuff the FC model didn't have. (I've still gotta add my kickstand, but that's another topic) :D

Someone will perhaps correct ME here Duane but I was told the FX was a cross-country bike that came with the leccy boot and the wiring harness ready for lights etc. so is it an FX spec bike?

regards

Taffy
