I run a 19'' tire and am looking to see what everyones opinion is on the best knobby tire for shale, rockys, hard packed trails. I ride nothing but major rocky mountainy trails and keep tearing up tires. i dont ride on any pavement just straight trail. what would you suggest for a tire?

I'm thinking at this point that a 110/100 18 and only look at the price.

There may be a struggle getting a 110/100 18 onto a 19" rim.

You might want to try the Pirelli MX Extra. I use the 120/100/18 on my 650, but I believe they
also have 120/90/19 to fit your wheel.
The knobs are big, like 5/8 to 3/4 tall and will not chunk. And I have spun it numerous times on
jagged rock.
And it lasts a long time. It's rated mid soft to hard.
With the 18 wheel you do need to have the axle somewhat near the rear portion of the swingarm for the 120/100 tire not to rub the mudflap. So it's something to consider with the 19 wheel also. They make a 110/90/19 also
I have a few wear marks there because its a tall tire.
But I'm going with it.

A while back I asked Fritz what tires he runs up there in Gunnison where there are a lot of sharp rocks and hard pack and he suggested the Bridgestone 403/404 combo. I see that they do make that rear in a 100/90-19. These are excellent tires, I'd say the best I've every run. Run them with the 4mm thick Bridgestone tubes at 13psi and you should be good to go. They will wear, but, they work great. I run these tires down here in the So Cal Desert where there is a wide range of conditions sand, lot's of lava rock, and hard pack.

You might seriously consider changing out that 19" to an 18" as there are a lot more choices for tires in 18".

Here some combo's for your 19" rear wheel.

True Dale,
The 403/404 combo is a good choice.
I used them for motocross since 2007. And they are very good offroad and resist chunking.
Although the sight of the 110/100/18 on my FE650 was small from the start it did perform
well but ultimately suffered in longevity compared to the Pirelli mx extra. And initially does
work better but for off road hard pack, rocks etc. I needed something better.
For the 19 there is a 120/80/90 that he might like to try in the Bidgestone 404.

All true,

Except he is running a 450, and a 120 is a bit much for a 450.

Tried to put a larger pic up but had problems with pixel requirements.

[attachment=0:1ued0qfj]securedownload.jpg[/attachment:1ued0qfj]I changed a setting on my cell phone. Here's another one.
The used one has over 20 hours of severe abuse with the center knobs still 3/8 tall and no chunking.
