Hey guys, I did various searches but found no relevant info so...

I bought a 2003 fs 650 2 months ago, after finally getting it started I warmed it up then changed the oil there were some small metal particles (+/-0.3mm diameter) in the oil but I wasn't too worried as It was probably a while since the last owner changed the oil and there wasn't that much.

I rode the bike for an hour, seemed fine although a little noisier from the left side case than when I test rode it :?:

So I decided to make sure and dropped the oil + filter again, it seemed fairly normal then I thought hey this seems too simple and checked the manual, discovered the screen! On removing it, I found the last cm to come out fully coated in metal chippings (+/- 1mm diameter) I tested with a magnet and they stick so its not Alu.

This seems to me like possibly bearing residue??

Any advice greatly received!

yep.
first thing to do is pull the cam cover and inspect the rocker bearings (although they usually leave a bunch of long slivers of dull metal), and look at the cam support bearings too. next would be to pull the clutch cover and mag cover and do a main bearing shake. look at anything with a bearing or bushing.
looks ominous.

Thanks, that's really cheered up my bank holiday :? ! I hope it is just the top end but the LHS noise makes me fear for the worst. I've also found a nasty crack in the frame at the bottom of the down tube where it branches into the cradle which I originally thought was just flaky paint I'll have to take the engine anyway out to weld it properly. I'll post what I find...

Finally got round to stripping the engine down. I'm a bit disappointed as I haven't found anything I would consider the cause of the metal bits, a couple of very slightly notchy bearings here and there....

I filtered the 1hr old oil and there was a lot of dull aluminium residue too (still had the alu cam gear fitted) I've also got to inspect the balancer bearings and the left main properly so maybe the fault lies there. At least I caught it before major destruction! I'll try and down size some pics to post.

Have you checked the space where the cam chain is?
Sometimes when the cam chain gets worn it rubs against the side of the engine case.

I don't recall any marks there. The space below the cam sprocket on the head did have marks but it looked more like from cleaning up with a Dremel than gouging from rubbing. I'll double check and post pics tomorrow.

the noise and the damage shout cam chain knackered to me. get a proper cam chain. i pulled a DID last week - knackered after about 4 hours. it had munched so much of the engine that the oil pump is knackered and the bearings are shot, big end as well. even the oil was silver in colour.

Taffy

cam chain is a regina, tensioner was maxed out with black guide and no alu knob The lower sprocket was gauged, the outer side only also the selector shaft wheel on the outer side only. I think your probably right Also on cleaning the follower bearings with brake cleaner the, inlet seems a likely candidate too. Time for a complete overhaul!

Hi everybody, sorry for rising same issue...but...
Almost forgot: names Sigitas, from Far Away, which means somewhere at the Baltic sea, Vilnius city if more specific.
Reading this forum since changed Yamaha to Berg, and that happened this winter.
And since that one question is always in my head and can not find the answer.
Until now I was killing Taffy with questions, but can't do that on one man too long.

The question is same metal chipping (or shavings).
There is always some of it on the magnet during oil change.
Here I attached picture after today oil change (10 hours again).
Is it normal wear or I should start fear and prepare for engine rebuild?
Does anybody has this kind of pictures? (sorry if they are and I just did not find).
Hos does it look "bad"?

Everything else is perfect - oil filter and oil screen clean, starts and runs perfect, maybe just a little bit too noisy, but not sure if it is not normal,
great bike overall, a real pleasure to ride.

Thank you!

Looks about normal to me, 10 hour changes are probably a bit long though 5 hours would be better and you would have half the debris!

In manual they say "every 15 hours". And I'm not very hard rider, so thought 10 is quite reasonable?

I try to clean the magnetic drain plug before each ride. The ride might only be a hour or so but still you find stuff stuck to it, but i have found after doing this every hour after a rebuilt does help slowing it from collecting so much and oil also looks better too and stay cleaner longer. Takes you two minutes to do screen and mag plug with bike leaning over. It just piece of mine and you can catch any other problem quicker that waiting for next service as i found out when i blew a main seal and found bits of the tiny seal spring stuck to it.
