So I live on an Island in the middle of nowhere. I need to change my oil. The only thing I can get that even comes close to what I am supposed to use is Mercury Verado 4 stroke outboard engine oil. SAE 25W-50. It's not fully sythetic its a blend. It's designed for their 4 and 6 cyclinder supercharged outboards.
Thoughts?
 
Not recommended, but if that's all ya got, it's better than the alternative. Might be a little harder to start cold.
You got no conventional motor oil??
 
Sure there's regular stuff available. There's also some Lucas 0W 40 sythetic. Kind of scared of that number. I'll take this mercury **** back and just wait for a shipment of the right stuff...maybe with my new kickstarter. But if you thought the KTM oil was expensive at the shops add shipping on top of it. Sheesh.
Actually I got a jug of 10W30 sythetic for the truck here but it won't have the fancy additives in it. Maybe try the saw shop tomorrow.

The Canadian dollar is almost par with the US dollar so your costs should be reduced. You live in the Great White North, thinking out of the box should come normal.

I use Shell Rimula R4 15w40 diesel engine oil its mineral but it complies to the same specs as delo 400 witch the Americans use.
 
I would use the truck oil first. Like they said, if you can find a 15/40 weight oil (diesel spec), that will work fine. I have run that many times with good results.
In a perfect world you would run a JASO spec motorcycle specific oil, but it's really not necessary in that farm implement you call a motorcycle :D
 
I automatically excluded all oils that said Diesel. There are tons of diesel boats and machinery here so I am sure I can find some rottella oil here. Will look today. Thanks!
 
Realy ? 15W/40 diesel spec. I have been useing 10W/40 ams-oil because it's only a 50 mile drive to get. Do you think I should switch ? She's running pretty good. I thought it needed something there for a while but it truned out to be a flat front tire and for some reason it wouldn't ride on top of the 4 inches of wet mud I had. So, a little air and now we're back to 1/4 twist wheelies and it feels like we are in a speeded up films every where we go. I think I have a seal from a 02 KTM. Think it'll fit ?
 
Use the rotella synthetic... the mineral stuff is too hard on clutches. 5w40 is fine in fact better for you than 15w40.
 
After years and hundreds of posts on what oil to use (on this site) the conclusion was 15/40 Delo 400 (Chevron) or 15/40 Shell Rotella. That is of course you cant or wont run a JASO rated motorcycle specific synthetic oil.
In the older bikes, it made alot of sence since we were changing oil every ride or so. Lineawever brought it to our attention that the Delo 400 was what he had been running all along. If it's good enough for your 18 to 1 compression diesel with a turbo spinning up to 100,000 rpms running at 4-500 degrees, it should be good enough to run in your Berg for a few hours.
I have run gallons of Delo through several bergs and never had an issue.
 
I put some fresh Delo 400 in my new to me DR650 tourer and the gear change and clutch action were immediately improved. Not sure what was in it, or how long it had been there, but the previous owner said it was serviced at his local bike shop, and done 1,500 kms ago. Looked cleanish coming out and I've no reason to doubt him. As discussed previously, I like the Delo 400 in my dirt bikes.

I serviced mine using motul 5100 and the shift action became notchy so I topped the level up to near the top of the sight glass and it spits oil in to the air box and I can smell oil when I'm riding but shift action is slightly less notchy ( same with my mates bike ) The stupid oil has the jaso grade so what gives ? I'm gonna finish this bottle ( at 64 bucks for 4 litres I aint gonna waste it ) and go the delo. Can any of the Aussie bergites tell me if the caltex branded delo is the same stuff everyone else is on about ? I'd hate to smoke my clutch. I serviced my 08 550 before I sold it and never rode it cos I polished the *** off it so I dont know if it was righteous and the dealer hasn't sold it yet so no feeback.

I recently serviced my 06 496 with Motul 5100 and the Rekluse clutch would not work when cold. Changed the oil over to Delo and bingo, no clutch problem.
 
Well I did one more search for oil and came up empty on the diesel stuff but I found some Castrol Syntec 5W-50 that has the lastest ratings (GF4,GF3,GF2) anyways whatever that means it's actually made by BP they make the oil for the turbine engine we use on the airplane so I think my Husaberg will be OK.
 
As discussed many times on this site, Delo 400 at any Oz Caltex servo, just make sure its not the LE version, or Silver, or Gold etc, just Delo 400.

Thanks for that steve, I am aware tht Delo 400 has been discussed numerous times here and on other forums but I haven't seen the recomendation for " just delo 400 " and wasn't aware of the varieties on offer so thankyou for saving me from making a major f^&k up. :cheers:
 
Ok from what i understand Delo 400 if you can find it is the better choice, i'm out here in Cyprus and we dont have castrol or caltex garages out here, so i cant find a cheaper option for oil so i've had to fork out $$$$ on power syn motrex everytime i do a change. i think i've seen this motul 5100 at a gas station up the road. AGIP Garage what your guys thought on ant other oil or even this motul 5100. My clutch is std
