speedometer or computer

My 2011's computer never worked when I bought it. I've replaced internal battery and checked wiring and nothing. Is this common, and what is the fix? I can't see paying $250 for an OEM unit. I'm running Flexx Bars and wonder if anyone has an aftermarket computer mounted, and even better...
