Hi Mark,
The "hardest" job is to dismount and mount the reservoir. The smallest 1/4 inch ratchet set you can find would be very handy. Teng Tool makes a couple of very nice sets.
- take of the seat,
- take off the tank spoilers, or at least one side.
- NO NEED TO TAKE OFF THE AIRBOX
- dismount the black plastic sub-frame, six bolts.
the middle two bolts need special attention: start with the first two most forward
screws, than loosen one of the two middle screws, leave the two screws that hold the
sub-frame and rear-fender in place for the last.
Now move the arm of the black plastic support outwards so that you can put a 12 mm
spanner on the aluminum threaded tube and undo the screw on the opposite side.
If you don't do it this way it might happen the the aluminum tube will loose it's
embedded position in the tank.
- undo the electrical connection to the fuel-pump
- disconnection the fuel line quick-release
- take off the tank.
- now undo the left- radiator screws, the ones that mount the left radiator to the chassis.
you can leave the right-hand radiator in place.
- Undo the carter ventilation hose
- NOW COMES THE SPECIAL TOOL IN ACTION.
- Take of the four screws holding the rocker cover, it is possible to undo the two M6 bolts
on the right-hand side with the small ratchet set.
the alternative is to loose the right-hand radiator to get better access.
-now follow the instructions in the repair manual to check the valve clearance.
My experience with the 4 FE 2009 bikes I use is very positive. They accumulated 42.000 km and adjustments are seldom needed and far apart.
I'm confident that the tappets don't need to be adjusted. Just make a note of the clearances for future reference.
hope this is of any help,
cheers, Adriaan
