I have a wonderful 2003 FC470 that I have just replaced the piston, rings, gaskets, timing chain and engine bearings.
I also replaced the stator because the spark was weak and it would'nt start. All I get is an occasional BOOM from the exhaust with a mean flame. But it just won't fire. Its driving me crazy!
Any ideas??

Hi

Yes, a lot of ideas ... that is the problem

So the basic, I presume you have a good spark ?? is the timing correct ?

If everything is right ?? its probably the carb, is it clean ??
Try to raise the idle a bit, they usualy like that to start.

yep, lots of potential causes but first one that comes to mind is if you are one or two teeth out on the timing chain.

I'm thinking carb as well. Any rags forgotten in the intake (been there)? Manual decompression cable properly adjusted? Fresh plug? What does the plug look like? Wet?

Thanks guys, I re-checked the cam timing, all ok. I even used a degree wheel this time..
The spark plug is quite dry, so I'm thinking carb now after reading posts.
The Stator is from Electrix World and the spark is strong. I still have the same problem with the bike since replacing the stator.. :)
So I will check the carb out next.

Carb overhauled, all new now, still no start and same problem. It sounds like it's firing on the exhaust stroke..Could the CDI be faulty and cause this?? :|

I had a husky 125 doing the same thing last summer and the woodruff key on the flywheel was sheared and the flywheel would move on the taper. I did a top end ( needed it anyway) and rebuilt the carb before I found the trouble. To me this sounds like ignition timing. I would check flywheel, stator. The cdi only fires when it is told too. Hope this helps.

+1 on the flywheel key, also had a husky TC 610 with the same thing, rebuild and then no go, the magnets and plastic cage in the flywheel had lost their bond and spun.

I didn't want to say it, but now I will. The Electrix stators are or at least used to be crap. There are a few reports of them shagging the CDI,

when they half start and backfire then it is either lack of fuel or the stator has gone.

take a stator reading off the electrex stator.

If you're English then I'm guessing you're the Northerner who called me yesterday. apparently there is now no spark at all. I'm unclear whether the Electrex stator packed up straight away or the coil has been knobbled by the electrex.

BTW Ken, this is happening 40-50% of the time mate? seriously, if the electrex doesn't die of rust (same as the SEM) then it knocks out the coil.

there aren't many electrex owners out there with both running well!

regards

Taffy

Comments from a "have a go fool", so undoubtedly I will get severely shot down.
When I first did the valves myself I set it all up just past / before whatever TDC all as book..........................180 degrees the wrong way.....doh. could it be as simple as that.. :bounce3:
