Why do the valves tighten?

The Husaberg that I am picking up in two weeks will be my first 4 stroke bike. So, I no experiance with 4 stroke bike engines. As I read here and ThumperTalk I keep on seeing that the valves tighten up in these and other 4 stroke bike engines. I know that when using a solid cam in a car, the valves loosen and require adjustment. What is different that would cause these valves to tighten? Is it that the valves are sinking into the seats?

thanks in advance,
Mark Piechowski

Several things could happen: the valve can wear into the seat; the seat can sink into the head; the stem can stretch; the valve head can "tulip" or deform more into a dish.

The one usually identified as a problem in these bikes is tuliping, especially if the engine is revved hard for long periods as is usual in motard. Taffy has probably seen it most and would be the best to talk to if you're worried. I have not seen the problem but then my bike does not get pushed hard.

Use of different cam profiles that reduce peak valve accelerations are said to help the problem. Dale Lineaweaver has done a lot of work on this and he produces cams that improve valve operation. People who have used them also report MUCH better engine performance.

What are you getting, what suburb are you in and where are you planning on riding?
I pick up my "new" 00 501 next week hopefully. Man what a refined weapon after the96 400!

Hi,

I don´t think that it is necessary to exchange the valves to other ones.
But you have always to keep an eye on your valve clearance.
It could happen that from time to time the valves are going to be too
tight. If you ride over a long period with too tight valves someday
you will get a really big damage because of a cracked valve.
A lot of 99 models had probblems with that because of the change to stronger valve springs. The seats weren´t strong enough for the higher pressure.
I didn´t see this problem at models 2000/2001 and newer.
But it has also a lot to do with your riding behavior.
