I would like to know if anyone has had a ride on 380 kitted Berg and what they thought?

380

Last year I raced a stock 380, it is relly nice in the tight stuff but feels a bit slow from the bottom when the track opens up. But it's not a lot slower than a 450 because of less wheelspin. It's much easier to ride than a 450.

This year I have a 380 with modyfied head, camshaft, ignition, exhaust and carb. It runs very good. When tested against a 07 KTM 450 it feels stronger from the bottom, on the dyno it produses about 40 hp on the rear wheel. Of course a 450 is faster on higher revs.
The bike is still very easy to ride.

RE: 380

hopefully cypher will read this and give you alink to a magazine write up on:

"450 v 380 husabergs". it's from a month ago in our english bible - TBM!

380 was better in the woods, 450 blitzed it in the open.

infact do a search on it because i think he pasted it up in a thread of it's own!

here it is

RE: 380

what i'd like to know is how the 380 compares to the 400.

RE: 380

well i've ridden three 450's and my 400 but i haven't the 380. my 400 was crude and gutless but i didn't say that at the time!

i know that the 380 has
bigger exhaust valves
longer duration cam
keihin carb
kokusan ignition

just 3mm shorter stroke

hope this helps!

Taffy

i rode one and was not impressed.leave it a 450 and save a bunch if money and effort .dan

Depends where you are riding. My buddy had an 06 FE380 and in the single track it was awesome!

He had an Omero tank and the e-start removed and the bike felt lighter than a 250F. It always started on the 1st kick, hot or cold as well.

I could see the desert guys not liking it as much though.

Sorry man, the 380 is only possible with a 450. THat is not to say that the 380 piston may be installed into your 650, but I'm not sure your end displacement, nor do I know if it is even possible, that the sleeve may be too short to accomodate the longer 650 stroke.

Thanks fryguy, I should consider just trading the 650 motor for a 450 to do so..

from an outsiders perspective, having only ridden my 550 and done a few laps on a 2001 / 02 fc501, if you dont find the throttle stops on your 450 normally, you would probably benefit from the 380, that said, there will allways be the riders that due to terrain or love of adrenaline of a bike that can bite hard at the flick of the throttle, then the standard models are probably quite satistactory.

Sutto, are you thinking about stocking the kits? - the TBM write up is a good read, but a bit of a rambling account I thought (no offense to uour pommie berg brothers).

Azza.

Azza,
Yeh I can get hold of a kit no problems! Just wanted to see what everyones take on the conversion was like first. My other bike is a KTM250EXC-F and it is trick! But I think a 380 would be just the ticket as all I ride over here is knarly single track, I might be onto something going by the FIM lately?

then sutto may i suggest that you look into the KTM 400 piston. it has a bore of 89mm which is 3mm down on the husey and with the husey's 57.2 stoke it works out at 355.9cc. it'll have the same little end but the deck height may be out slightly. we can adjust this with different con rod lengths as the husey and ktm share similar b/e sizes. we have a list of rod lengths under tuning in the doc. but anayway, placing a 400exc piston on the some little end pin as the husey 400 piston should reveal the deck heights. if the katoom is up to about 1.5mm taller you can machine this off the piston outer diameter to get the squish right and have fantastic compression.

head gasket? cometic (Lineaweaver) in the USA make head gaskets to order and have the patterns for all husaberg sizes. i had a pair of 97s made.

a rule on squish for you (as the bore would be so small compared to the 100mm of the 450FE): no more than 8mm wide before you must go for a fatter squish of about 2mm/0.080". otherwise it slows the piston down.

now i wonder if you're in a position to follow this one through? (LOL). i think a little 37mm carb off a 250 would suit. one thing i would do is put some epoxy down the inlet ports in the branch arena (can't really describe it as a port at this point) as they are well oversize for this project.

hi there,i aknowledge that ktm pistons used in rfs range (pre 2001 husaberg originated) use a 20mm pin like husabergs but the axis of the pin is slightly off-set from the central axis of the piston.
therefore i believe it would cause a problem if put in husaberg motor.
