I was wondering if anyone can shed abit of light on what different sprockets sizes will do for me? recently got my first supermoto and thought i'd sign up on here.

Anyhow i was wondering if it would benefit me to change the sprockets, it's currently got a 16 on the front and a 45 on the back.

Was wondering what everyone else is running on theres and what is best for say, top end speed, and off the mark power etc.

cheers all

Im not motarding but im mx ing i have a 2005 FC550 with the 4 spd it came with 13---48 depending on the terrain i cold holeshot a nitro car but the vibration was numbing at high rpm s,i now went to 15---45 i use all of the gear box now overall speed is much better, the vibrations are not so severe.im not sure if this helps you with motard,i tried to fit a 16 tooth and i would have to remove the chain slide on the swingarm...................Paul

Hi.
Welcome.
What are you going to do with your bike? racing or cruising?

Racing: gear the bike so it reaches the rpm stop on high gear on longest straight.
Crusing: 16/38, no fun due to it only goes fast.
15/50, not rideble goes on the backwheel on all gears, but ......

During the winter we now set the bike up with 15/38 for the ice, we have some long straights and not so sharp turns. but our 700cc pulls hard on all gears.

RE: Re: Which sprocket setup?

welcome to UHE dennis.

we don't know what you ride dennis so please put this in your signature. it does sound about right though. you want to be just under the redline in top. but in no way do you want to easily reach it because the engine will rev itself to death.

RE: Re: Which sprocket setup?

cheers for the input guys.

I'm riding an FS650, thats her in my piccy. im planning on waiting for some warmer weather before i get it out much. Just planning on getting it how i want it before then and need to replace a couple of bits. such as my electric start doesnt seem to be doing much atm, just makes a contact noise?!

Im only going to using the bike for on road pleasure, not intending on racing. I just want a gear set up that is going to be the most fun. Im not over fussed about high top end speeds, just quick of the mark sort of bottom end and mid range power if thats possible?

cheers
dennis

RE: Re: Which sprocket setup?

Welcome to UHE Dennis !
My FS650 has a 16t front sprocket and a 42t rear sprocket. Ive not ridden it much but my initial feeling is that this is a good happy medium for the uk roads. Front wheel will raise in first two gears off the throttle and 3rd with a gentle tug. It maxes out about 105mph (i had to see what it would do-on a private road of course!).
This summer i will be dropping the front sprocket to a 15t for a bit more low down power and easier wheelies and leaving the rear sprocket as it is because like you, i dont want to end up behind bars because i couldnt control my right hand.
For future reference i believe that dropping one tooth on the front sprocket is like adding 3 teeth to the rear.

So my summer 'setting' will be 15t front and 42 rear.
hope this helps !

Hi Dennis and welcome. I run 16t and 38t on my 650 which is just for road use. Works well for me, still gives great acceleration through the 1st 5 gears and leaves 6th as a sort of overdrive, will still pull 6th no problem, you just have to rev it hard in 5th. Will cruise at 80 - 90 all day and max's out at just over 130 with a long enough road. Wheelies no probs in 1st 3 gears off the throttle and 4th with a bit of clutch, 2nd to 5th wheelies are very easy and always look the best.

I use my bike for the same. I'd recommend erring on the high side for gearing. Mine is a pre2001 600 and I run 17/41 on the 17" rear wheel.

I'd gear it so that in top gear it starts to lug (about 3800 to 4200 RPM) and feel like it needs to change down to 5th at 80 to 90% of the open highway speed limit. Doing that, it'll cruise all day at the speed limit in top gear with minimal engine wear. If you want to get up & go you knock it down one or two gears. If you want to crack it open it'll redline at about double the limit - but of course I wouldnt know! Your actual maximum speed will depend on how well you can tuck up out of the wind.

With this gearing, 1st gear is pretty fast, but not too much of a problem. A while back I took the 'berg on a 5000+ bike rally through town. Others had worse problems going slow than I did.

I've got a 98 Fe600 currently geared 15/42 would like to go a little higher. what are my options? Road use only no track time. who stocks sprockets here in the US?

I'm with on-one-wheel on his gearing at 15/42. I'd imagine that your speed limits on the road are around 70mph/110kph. I run this gearing when I'm streetin as its good for wheelies in 5th to 120kph & still not chugging in 6th when your cruising. I got my bike (08 FS650) brand new so it came with 15/16 front sprockets & 38/42 rear ones which gives me a wide open range. Sometimes easier to change the front sprocket but the 16t can be a root to get on past the swingarm protector. Once you have a few sprockets & change them regularly you benefit because they all get evenly worn & saves on chain wear also.

I'm trying to buy a 16t front sprocket for my 98 fe600 a husaberg dealer I called said he has a ktm sprocket that he thought is for a 525exc that it would fit but tight on the shaft. tap on then pull off with a puller. is this true or can someone direct me to the proper part number and a supplier in the US?

Two stroke Husqvarnas use the same sprocket as the early Husabergs. KTM ones are different. At a pinch you can use one off a four stroke Husky, but it is 1mm thinner through the boss.

the 2T sprockets are exactly the same. as the other thread says: that gives the genetic code of the sprocket.
