My 2000 FC501 is misting the engine case pretty heavy. Here's a pic following a 15-20 minute ride through the woods:

It would appear that the oil is emerging from between the head and the cylinder jug, and appears to be coming out pretty good.

Is this common on these engines? Aside from the obvious, is this indicative of the need for some type of maintenance? I mean could this be the outward sign of a more serious inward problem?

RE: Where

from the picture(it's hard to tell because of the fun you were having in the dirt) looks to me like it is coming out higher up like from between the rocker cover and head, now that IS VERY common. There is a fix in THE DOC involving a plate of glass, some sandpaper, and just the right amount (and right kind) of sealant. Another place to look is the crank case breather tube where it attaches to the rocker cover, if there is a crack or if the clamp is not tight you will see what you are seeing.

+1 Nail-Head Done

Thats what Shaggys was doing............ fixed that new it needs a head and base gasket

Look on the bright side
You only need to change the filter every 500 miles and never change the oil :p

Now its like another brand that begins with a H ardly if its leakin its still got oil :p

Now thats funny coming from Taffy! Let me help you out mate! +1 nail-head translates to " I agree with Risky1, he hit the nail on the head! The next one, shaggys did that too, and he needed a head and base gasket as well. He only needs to change the filter every 500 miles, because the oil is changing itself by leaking, and new oil constantly being added. H ardly, is a slam against Harley Davidson, they used to say if it is not leaking, your out of oil! Hope this helps
