Had a chat with the mechanic who set my crank end float and he suggested to me that the oil could be dissapearing through the valve guides.

This could very well be true, since I had oil consumption before the rebuild and it's apparantly still here. All the parts were changed except the valves and valve stems (did put in new seals). I know stupid of me not to have tought about this earlier.

So now I'm wondering, I did put in new seals on the valve guides so that should keep the oil in the engine, no? Or could the oil somehow work it's way past the seals because there is possibly to much play between the valve and the valve guide? Anyone had this with there Husa. Just wanna know your guys opinion before I take the head off and have it checked out by an engineer.

Christof.

Surely if the guides were that loose the fellow would have replaced them as loose guides cause walking on the valve seats and a corresponding loss of compression not just oil consumption.

All he did was set my crank end float, he didn't check the guides or anything. I did all the rest of the work. I do remember the valves are pretty 'snug' in the guides, certainly no excessive play. Offcourse I do not know what is acceptable and what is not 'play' wise.

Does the motor smoke excessively, especially on start up?

No, not on start up, not when it's warm, that's what I find so weird about this.

Did you fit new rings when you rebuilt it if so they can take a while to bed in.

Sparks.

Yes I did, got the HC piston, even sent it to the replating company so they could measure the piston and get the nicasil perferct.

How much oil are we talking about.

Regards

Sparks.

That's quite a bit so if you were burning that much it'd prolly be smokin like a 2 stroke.
Double check for leaks - perhaps around the countershaft seal or the dreaded weephole.

hey .. thats a lot of oil in a short period , my fresh motor used 200ml in 1500 klm . real hard riding in deep sand with a phat chick on the back .

hi, the rings are probably not bedded in to the bore, i,ve had the same trouble on a couple of bikes, with it being plated as well, the only thing i can think of from the top of my head is, are the rings specified for a plated or a cast iron bore, i've had this aswell after fitting an after market set of rings , the rings were chrome plated in a plated bore and wouldnt bed in, check what material your rings are ,hope this helps.

cheap oil helps bed a bore in too, that is what we used to do, bed it in on cheap crap then put some decent stuff in after 500 miles.but if the rings and bore are the correct material it will bed in eventually..even on the most slippery of oils.

The piston I'm using is a OEM Husa one for a 450, so the rings should probably be fine, is there anyway to check if they are for plated or cast iron?

I used Mineral 10w 40 for breaking it in. Have about 400km's on it and am gonna switch to semy synthetic oil now.

yes , if they are chrome , then you cant miss seeing the chrome edge of the rings , if they are completely cast cast then they are either black or grey in colour, but i would have thought that the rings will be the correct ones from oem, unless it was'nt a standard bore size and an oversize piston designed for a bored out berg with a cast liner, plated bores take lots of bedding in .it wont be stem seals , you find that they will drag oil in when you shut off the throttle, due to the vacuum build up in the inlet manifold, and if it were it would only tend to smoke when you opened the throttle again , then clear at about 1/3 throttle up to maximum rpm, rings will smoke more as you increase the rpm and never clear. is your bike a later one with the oil pump fed cam shaft, i dont know if bergs suffer from to much oil in the valve train , if your guides were shot it would rattle and be difficult to start due to bad seating of the valves.you should have a few thou play in your guides but i have seen some engines where you can move the valves 3 or 4 mm side ways and still didnt smoke due to the stem seals being good. just another thought? i used to own a 2000cc 435 bhp rs cosworth and if i put mineral in that i got blue smoke , but if i used fully synthetic , no smoke and no oil loss, the synthetic may be the answer to your bike, check make sure it isnt breathing smoke out of the breather , that is what you are looking for when you suspect bad or broken rings.....ian
