I'm on the verge of buying a Husaberg FE 550 from 2004. Only the engine has a bit of a weird sound in it. Can't really place it, and i'm not shure if it's normal. Looked on youtube, to compare it to other FE 550, and found one that has a similar sound.

Here is the link

Is this sound normal for this bike?

It can be the clutch which is normal when they are hot, but it doesn't look ilke he's using it on this climb, which would actually help as it happens.

Its sounds like the induction whistle which is a function of the frame airbox setup unique to Bergs, althouigh this is more obvious at higher revs. They are a noisy motor too.

I too have an 04 550, but, mine doesn't sound like the one in the video, at least not as loud.

However, it does sound different than any other bike around. It has a lot to do with the straight cut gears on the primary nut, and clutch gear. They are noisier, but, stronger than gears cut with an angle. They make a whining noise when revved. Like I said, my bike doesn't sound like the one in the video, at least the whining noise is not that acute, but it is there. I wonder how much the recording device itself has to do with this sound, ie, is the microphone or audio recording card more sensitive to this particular frequency.

As Steve pointed out, there is a chirping noise that comes from the intake that becomes more noticeable in the midrange, kind of sounds like an old VW beetle exhaust. All the bikes with FCR's I'm pretty sure have this noise to some degree or another, but, because of the air filter arraingment on the berg you hear it much more.

The main thing you need to know about buying this bike is how many hours and miles are on it, and it's maintenance history.

That is the sound of the infamous mismatched starter sprag on the 02 bikes. How that would happen in an 04 is beyond me unless the sprag is just on it's way out or has been damaged. It might be worth pulling the main clutch cover and inspecting the sprag.

That's my guess anyways. I have heard that noise on at least 2 bikes, tuts being one of them. Both bikes have run with that sound for years.

Come to think of it, I think Colbys 04 650 was just starting to make that noise last time I heard it.

Try again! Double row counter balancer bearings. When I went from the single row to the "correct" double row counter balancer I acquired that sound. I have all most five hundred hours on an up graded 02FX470E.

Is this sound normal for this bike?
no, not normal, but not necessarily a problem unless you are trying to sneak up on somebody. i agree with berger/ marlin: its a mismatched gearset somewhere due to something that was changed.

I'll go with Steve and DaleEO, regarding the induction noise, but I am thinking that it has been excaserbated by the recording device.

I notice it on my FE550 but only when I am riding with my helmet off, or especially after an air cleaner clean after a valve adjust I noticed the whistle a little more.

Azza.

I have an updated 02 fx470 and it does NOT make any sound even close to that, but I also do not have an E-starter on it anymore, that may be the difference. My .02

I'm still pretty confident in my starter sprag/gear opinion. Whatever it is, it's not normal. On the other hand, just because it's not normal doesnt necessarily mean that there is impending doom at hand.
This is the noise the bike on youtube is making. It sounds like the bike has a gear drive supercharger on it.The noise will be there under all operating conditions.
The intake noise that is normal is kind of a chirping/pinging noise that can be heard under light to medium throttle opening.

Thanks guys, from hearing you all it doesn't sound like a showstopper to me. And with all the info available on this site for this bike, i'm pretty confident buying it. After a few test runs i'll open it up and see if i can find any mismatched parts. If i do i'll let you know.

Mine sounded exactly like that for about 3 years, took the e-starter off and it didn't improve. The engine is now nearly back in the frame, I had Gary Grover source me a complete set of gears to match my existing clutch basket so I'm hoping that the whine my be less.

Cheers

Barry
