hey guys i recently purchased what i thought was a 2003 fe650. there was a slight oil leak from the left hand clutch cover so i decided to change the gasket but when ive taken the cover off the gasket that i bought looked nothing like the one i was taking off. i went searching for the engine number that is supposed to be stamped on the crank case on the left but it wasnt there. the only engine number i found was a 6 digit numeral on the right hand side just under the husaberg stamp.

could someone please tell me exactly what engine i have so i can get the correct gasket. thanks

I'd say it is a 01, 02 or 03. It doesn't have the split left hand cover that came with the 04s and it is not the older 00 cover either.
If it doesn't look at all like it would fit you have gotten an all together different gasket. I don't know if the older and newer will fit (I can't imagine they will) but they will certainly look similar.
That's my 0.02$

If it has a oil magnet-->'03
If it has no oil magnet-->'02 or older
Yeah, that's right.
I knew there was something to tell the 03 from 01/02 but couldn't remember when I wrote my reply. The 01 also has a wire from the kick start that activates the auto decomp lever, not sure if the 02 has it but I'm almost sure that the 03 doesn't have it.

RE: Re: RE: whats that engine?

the main difference i can see is that there is a circle of gasket where the water duct enters the motor and looking at the parts manual the 2003 doesnt have that. the closest one i can find is the 2004 gasket but that motor is completely different.
the black one is the one i need but the pale one is what the dealer said was for a 2003

The pale one is for a 2004 and newer. Wait while I get a pic....

I maybe have pulled the trigger to fast....
The 2004 and the 2007 gaskets have the same parts number but the pics doesn't look alike inte the parts manual. And the manual also says it is the same from 2003 and forward....

The part number 220 093-01 from the 2003 manual is replaced by the 2004 800.30.025.000 according to what I can find out.

The number for 2002 and 2001 is 220 073-01 and in the picture from the 2002 parts manual it doesn't have the outside hole above the kick start lever like your black one. None of them seem to have the big hole inside the water pump though.

Only three attachements per post. Here is the 2002 gasket

In your first post it looks like you have the outside hole above the kick lever which indicates that you have a 2003 engine and that the older gasket is incorrect and that the new one is correct.
What puzzles me is the ring in the gasket inside of the water pump and that the new one doesn't have it. I can't remember how all the gaskets I have changed looked like and I've had one 2001, one 2003, two 2004, one 2005 and now have a 2006...

could this be connected to the fact that there isnt the normal engine number stamped on the crank case. i thought that would be done at the factory so why isnt it there.

You should be able to use that gasket. I just installed one on an 01.

like berger says, you can use the same gasket on either one. according to your first pic, it looks to me to be an '01 or '02. there is no extra bolt hole above and behind the kickshaft.
since i have both types, i just keep the '03 up gasket and let the extra bolt hole part hang out.
about the water port loop, i'm not sure why they use it on one and not the other. i have seen no difference whether its there or not.
also saying its earlier than '03 is the tin bracket that holds the starter solenoid... same as my '02.

Just make sure you are using the water passage O'ring that goes in the engine case between the engine and the cover. The 01- 03 PM calls it a 340 117-1 and the 04 PM calls it a 0770 173024; same part just a different number. I would replace the old ring with a new one.

Joe

Lets see a picture of the seat. We can then determine if its an 01 or 02 model

Seems Australia got the first of the 03 bikes.

My 03 had no mag drain plug, small axle front forks etc. Also had mechanical speedo which was replaced at dealership with digital unit.By VIN plate and Frame no it is an 03.

Seems they were using up the last of the 02 componentry they had in the initial batches of 03 bikes until they could start using the 03 model specific stuff.

Us lucky Aussies, hey
