Just trying to figure out what years we will support with our new z-Start Pro model. This is the center clutch with the pins and nut that holds the center clutch down (instead of a snap ring).

Thanks,

al.

Looking at the spare parts book, '03 was the first year to go to the new style clutch hub with the roller pins.

Please let us know when the new z-start Pro is ready. I am ready to buy one asap. I am guessing the new model will hold up to the 550 and 650?

will the z start pro be applicable to the larger bikes?

Hi Al,
2003 comes to mind.

Hope all is well on your end.

Dale

'03 makes sense, that was the year KTM went to pins with the nut.

We should have the kits available real soon. We are waiting for feedback from our distributor in Sweeden testing on the 450/550 and 650s. The 450/550 will likely be one setup and the 650 another setup. Probably be available in the next couple of weeks.

Good to hear from you Dale, things are busy but going well. Will you be at Daytona this year? If so, I'll probably see you there. We will have a booth (for selling Harley stuff primarily) at the racetrack.

Bigger balls. :D
Ability to manually disengage the clutch at higher revs. (Engaging the clutch lever)
Admitting some things not fully perfect in the z-start.
That's development! Good work! :) :) :)

Did you change the ball ramp angle as well? With some oils the z-start balls have a tendency to wedge in somewhat, delaying automatic disengagement. Or did the nitration of the top plate on the new clutch cure that?

The Husaberg was a tough one for us before because it was basically a KTM RFS with a much slower primary ratio (more torque in the clutch, less centrifugal force).

The new clutch uses 7/16" balls vs 3/8" (more mass less friction) and actually uses a steeper ramp (19 degrees vs a net of about 17.5 degrees on the older clutch. It is a bit more responsive to sudden decelleration at the expense of a little more prone to free wheel without more engine drag at idle. We have tested as low as 16 degrees with pretty good success (more prone to sudden decelleration stalls but also better engine braking with less drag at idle). It's all a compromise.

Nitriding for the top plate is a wear thing. Fewer balls means more load on each ball, which meant more wear. On some of these clutches we are running as few as 21 balls.
