Hi was wondering wehats the best oil to use on my 95 fc499?, its being rebiult at the mo, also what maintenace should i be doing abnd how often, thanx

Andy,
I use amsoil 100% synthetic 10-40, I'm not a cold weather rider so my bike is usually only run march thru nov. I probably change the oil more often than I need to, my bike has never seen 15 hrs on a change, its usually closer to 10 hrs. Now that I'm 48 I can't ride as many hrs in a day.....LOL. I've read that some here have had good luck with rotella, but helping my father rebuild a powerstroke all i can envision is jet black heavy oil with rotella. I have since changed over my SLS and my ford lightning to Amsoil. If i'm lucky I only drive my lightning once a month. It used to have lifter knock when I first started it after sitting any longer than a week or two, now even if it sits unstarted for a month there is no knock in the engine at all when first started. I know there are several good synthetics out there now, if you stick with a name brand you should be fine.

big topic.....

....The issue of oil preferences is vast and endless. As bukeye already mentioned, many folks use Rotella. I am one of those folks. But not to say it is so superior.....I change my oil all the time.
One of the top mechanics in our industry was interviewed about many things, one of them being oil preference.....His response was, " If you are going to change you oil after every ride, there is no reason to use synthetic oil.... You are replacing the old oil before you have time to realize the advantage of synthetic oil." ...If you want to leave your oil in your bike for a while, which I highly discourage, then by all means use synthetic oil.....Rotella is 10.00 a gallon....4 oil changes for 10.00? THere is just no reason to leave it in for longer than a few hours of riding, in my opinion. Now in my two stroke bikes, we use synthetic premix exclusively, as it runs much cleaner, and can be mixed at a lower ratio, which keeps the power valve much cleaner in the long run.
