97-99 fc400 or fc600

The bike is a '95 or '96 model, or possibly a '94 (I can't remember the colors of the '94s). '97-'98 had dark blue frames and the '99s were silver along with a much better looking rear fender - although this bike appears to have an aftermarket fender on it. It is definitely a FC model as there is no rear frame loop but it could be a 501 as they made the FC as 400-501-600 in '95-'96.

I once owned a '96 FE501 and a friend had a '92 or '93 FE350, so I am very familiar with the older 'Bergs. Also, I have the '96 model year brochure somewhere in my archives at home.

I forgot to add that the '97-98 and possibly the '99s had a conventional fork on them.

So the frame has no chassis number??

I haven't found it, if there is one. I'll have to look around some more, and also see if I can find the engine number.

This is what my '96 FE501 looked when brand new. The '95 models looked the same except the graphics had more blue in them. All models used the same graphics and plastic.

The serial # is found on the steering head and the motor # is on the inner case on top somewhere (it's been too long since I looked at the one I had for me to remember exactly where).

Wow, looks nice! That one is close, as far as I can tell. I didn't find a kickstand lug on the frame, but it may have been ground off and the frame repainted. Swingarm was drilled and tapped for a kickstand, it looks like. Mine apparently has an aftermarket tank, but the radiator shrouds bolt onto it with screws like what I assume was stock.

The tank is stock - no one made an aftermarket one for those years - it's just missing the graphics which usually fell off real fast the first time you took it to a car wash. The earlier 'bergs did use a bolt-on kickstand fitted to the swing arm, so this may be a '95 since the '96 FE/FX models had a welded-on mount located like the later models on the frame, but the lack of a rear frame loop makes me think it a FC model.

Kinda hard to figure out.

Looking on bikepics.com, I see a 1990 FC with a frame loop over top of the fender, and a yellow frame,
a 1995 FE 600 with a blue frame and no visible frame loop, a 1990 501 with lights, but the tank, side plates, shrouds, even the countershaft sprocket cover and mag cover look exactly the same as mine -- but it has a black frame; and a 1992 FE 510 with lights, frame loop, and yellow frame....

What is an FC?

The FC is the motocross model with a close ratio transmission and no kick stand.

I am familiar with the '92 models as a friend I used to ride with had a FE350 that he bought new - it had a dark blue or black frame, blue tank, and blue plastic and the rear fender was mounted under the frame loop. I have never personally seen anything earlier than that bike. The '95/'96 models had yellow frames, plastic and tanks with the rear fender mounted over the top of the frame loop and the FC/FX models did not have a frame loop (no taillight to support). '97/'98 models had dark blue frames and tanks with neon yellow plastic. '99 models had a sliver frame, blue tank, and sor of pale yellow plastic. The FC models '97-'99 had a different tank that did not need a vacume operated pump to get the fuel up from the right side (better carb access) but it was a bit wider than the original style tank with the pump.

i have a 94fe501 with all the same coloring and no kick stand and the ugliest rear fender ever , could explain your aftermarket one

Zar, does yours have a rear frame loop or is it like mine?

Finally got back to this, and lo, there is a number tucked away behind the number plate, with lots of paint layers over it.... and, ladies and gents, we have a winner!

It is indeed a 1994 FE501.
