Hey everyone

Bought a 2007 FE550 today.
It's got the coolant drops coming out which only occur when the bikes warm.

It's done 200 hours and probably never replaced.
Can anyone tell me what part or part no. it will likely be? I have a hard time finding it in the spare parts booklet

Thanks

Thanks for that, My understanding is that I will need to replace #60 SHAFT SEAL RING 10X18X4?

Is that the correct seal?
Also it's to late to turn the bike on now, But is it possible that it is leaking due to the radiator cap? I took the cap off and it seemed to stop leaking (coincidence)

My batteries dead so I will have to kickstart it tomorrow and test it out

Are there any tutorials to changing the seal or just use the spare parts guide?

Okay,
I'm going to order #60 Seal & A water pump gasket just in case?

How much harder will it be to replace the seal without taking the case off?
Do you have a picture of the correct orientation of the seal, considering even some fitters put it in backwards

Hey, I have just gone through this; and, although I had other issues requiring me to pull the side cover, it should be fairly easy to do the job by just pulling the water pump cover. If you don't have a small puller that will work, it will be one of those jobs that might take an hour to find the right tools, but then less time consuming in the future.

The new seal goes in with the spring side out. Mine wasn't fully seated with the cover removed, requiring me to seat it more with the side cover in place. Very easy - just press the new seal in by hand as far as you can, then get a big washer with the hole as close a fit over the shaft as reasonably possible, slide the washer on next to the seal, then slide a 1/2" socket with the flat side against the washer, and using a hammer tap the socket to flush seat the seal.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Matt, I believe the KTM part# is 0760101844. Also, get the little O ring for the shaft part #0770010013.

I know that i'll have to drain the coolant beforehand, Whats the best hose to remove to drain it?

Also will i need to drain the oil?

The water pump hose is the best for draining the coolant.

If you don't remove the side cover, then you won't have to drain the oil.

How do I go about removing the seal?
I tried grabbing the rubber with a screwdriver but the metal outer wouldn't budge

Do I need to remove the clutch cover? or is there a way to remove the seal without it?

careful not to send the screws into the oil seal behind, there is approx 2mm gap

or with one of these

Prop Shaft Seal

Once the seal is out you can Dremel a 2 or 3 of small grooves in the housing to facilitate the next seal change. I don't have any pics of mine, but I'm sure you get the idea?

Thanks steve yeah I do understand, i'll have a look for one of those pick tools because there isn't much to drill into anymore

I'm having trouble to get the seal to seat all the way in, Have I got the seal the correct way in? I have the spring facing towards me (facing to the outside of the engine

Could there be something stopping it going in anymore that I can't see?

There is nothing there to seat the seal on from memory. Challenge is not to push it in too far, lest the space disappear and drain hole gets blocked.

Seal too wide?

try a socket or piece of pipe so you can push down in on the far end of the seal

you want it to fit around the spring and lip and fit inside the OD of the seal

Crap... Well I have put it all back together and then realised I have a spring left over.

Dad took the spring out so i don't know where it was meant to go...
Is this spring meant to go between the oil and radiator seals, And how important is it?

I filled up the radiator, And it got dumped straight into the oil
Have I damaged just the oil side ring or both? I could have possibly damaged the oil side seal but I felt really confident the coolant side would work (I didn't really pinch it or anything it got pressed in flush with a hydraulic press
Could the spring be the cause of this issue?

Crap... ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I'm assuming i've damaged the oil side seal now, can you replace it without removing the bearing?

Bearing has to come out for the oil seal, but its all one piece from memory. Alternative is an ORANGEBERG kit which uses a separate seal and a smaller bearing.

Be real careful with the kickstart shaft when pulling the cover. See if you can keep pressure on it the whole time. If it moves out a bit, you need to pull the clutch to reset it, and you don't realise until you find the cover just doesn't quite pull up tight. I know!

I don't recognise the spring, but its been a while since I pulled mine apart.

you can not contaminate oil with coolant as a result of worn seals on water impeller shaft. if this happened so quickly, this could happen only through rings on piston sleeve or o-ring which seals the channel from side cover to the left case. if the water seal leaks, the coolant leaks through the weep hole, even if the oil seal on the special bearing is worn, the coolant has not chance to go to the left case this way.
the spring is not an original part of your motor, forget about it.
