Waterproofing

I went for a long long ride the other day and the 'Berg was flawless! That was until the jet wash a few miles from my house... Maybe I got carried away but whatever happened I could not get it going again and had to push it home! Not what you want after 100 miles of offroading! A couple of days later it starts first kick again!

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I managed to soak to stop it working and any tips for stopping it happening again? I would like it to be very waterproof, I hate the idea that some water in the wrong place will stop it working as I'm always playing in the rivers!!

JETWASH!! Aaaaaggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! NO! NO! NO! Can't think of a worse way to clean a bike, or car, for that matter. Forces water past seals, gaskets, O rings etc., killing electrics, not to mention long term trashing of bearings etc. Anyway, rant over. For waterproofing I went round my bike unplugging all the electrical connectors and filling them with di-electric (silicone) grease. Done this on all my bikes for years and never had any water related electrical problems. For those connectors in splash areas I also made up some boots out of old inner tube and zip ties.

Another option is self-sealing tape. Amazing stuff. You stretch it around whatever you're wrapping, and in VERY short order it's all one piece of rubber.

We used to this at work under the name of 'self amalgamating' tape. Only 'problem' is it's a real PITA to remove if you ever have to open the joint/connector, you'll have to cut it open.

Exactly right. When that stuff seals, it seals.
