I am trying to register my 96 fc 400 for an off road vehicle sticker in colorado. the vin on the frame (right side by the bars) is impossible to read, I need the vin to register. Does anyone know of another location on the bike or any way to track down the number? Maybe through another bike specific part?
Thanks for any help/advice

maybe you could "borrow" a vin or partial vin(use what you can see of yours and put in the missing digits) from one of our overseas friends or someone on ebay parting one out?, its just a off road vehicle vin, do they actually check to make sure the vin number on the bike matches the sticker they give you? i doubt it, they just want to get paid once a year and as long as you got the sticker to show you paid i would think you would be good, they let you plate your atv's out there for road use so how picky could they be for an offroad vehicle? i have never registered any of my off road vehicles but also ride only on private land and live in a different state so i am sure there regulations are different

really once you got the sticker i'd think youd be golden forever, even if you got nabbed by the dnr for something why would they want to make you take off the faring to show them the stamped number when them sticker is right there? and if you did have to show it "hmmm thats weird it was just here last year" its a risk id be willing to take but thats just me and of course youd have to find somone else willing to give you there vin

maybe somone else has a better idea that would be legal, i was just throwing it out there, i dont know of any other vin stamping and would think a reserve vin look up from any parts would be impossible....good luck

then again after talking to three people and getting rejected, i played dumb and told my dmv i had a swedish sport motorcycle so they would give me a plate for it, so that shows what i think of regulations and maybe you shouldnt listen to me :D or better yet like i said earlier somone else will tell you another idea thats legal

Thanks,
I may just have to wing it. I know that the 10th digit is going to be t for the year and I can just barely make out 00008 as the last 4. what is the letter code and and other numbers that are required?

I am glad you asked, it made me aware of a vin error on my moto insurance, had to get my title to double check it, anyway, lets say there was such a thing as a 1997 fx650, if i was using my vin as a guide it would go somthing like this....YU7FX6501V0002046 there should be 17 digits,

also i thought i may have read somehwere that the last of your vin number somehow goes along with the number on the right side of the cylinder, above the engine cc number

if you knew the previous owners name and state that was registered they may have it on file too, it would be worth the call and the easiest thing, or could contact previos owner

if it really mattered to have it you could always buy a tweaked old berg frame and cut out the number and tac weld it to but i am sure it doesnt matter that much they will just be glad to take your money and give you a sticker

Thanks for the info, I contacted the previous owner and he did not have it. Seeing that its not street legal, I think that I really only need the right number of numbers and in the right places. on one of my other bikes I missed a number and they made me re submit before I got the sticker.

Thanks again...

Mmm, in England you can buy stamp kits they look like punches but have numbers or letters on the end of them. See if you can get those and restamp your frame!
