Dale,

A valve spring on my 2000 FE501E broke at 347.4 hours total time, should I be concerned about using new stock Husaberg springs in the rebuild (I am using your GRIND # 792 CAM)? Do you recommend a different gentler spring?

Hi Joe,
347.4 hours is considerable to ask of a single wire, steel valve spring in a performance environment. As the springs physical size is limited by existing engine design said spring has a high stress ratio and should therefore be considered a consumable item.

Note:
OEM Husaberg camshaft profiles truly tax the valve springs. The LR grinds are quite forgiving.

I do offer Titanium replacement springs on a per order basis with a cost of $600.00 per quad set. The lifespan of said springs has been determined infinite.

As for a steel spring you will find no better than OEM.

Hope this helps.
Best Regards,
Dale

Joe, it sounds like the 501 will be back roosting the desert some time soon. My 2000 600e is apart waiting parts from Motoxotica. It seems as though the sprague finally bit the dirt. I made my own case splitting fixture and thore it apart in no time. The hardest thing was to remove the cam crank sprocket with my $4.00 Harbor Freight GeaR Puller--it took about 2 hours. If I had a robust (and Low Profile) puller it would have been easy. After THOUSANDS of miles the only other parts worn were about 4 or 5 bearings (all ball Types), in the mainshaft, countershaft and Crank. Gear clusters looked like new. Crank perfect. Not bad considering.
I Should be back in the saddle in 10 days--just in time for round 2 of the Fall Cross-Country series.

Kevin,

The parts should arrive today from Motoxotica. I made a nifty tool for holding onto the crank and clutch basket. Just a piece of scrap aluminum electronics panel that I cut gear teeth into using the crank gear as a pattern. It locks up the clutch and crank gears. I'll post a picture of it if you need it.

Well I got the head back on Thursday, and now have my Berg running again. The total cost due to a broken valve spring was $630.23. The head work was sublet for $225.00, plus $30 labor for Brett to disassemble and reassemble the head after the valve guide and seat were replaced... The sublet shop also refaced the other 3 seats and valves. The rest of the $ was for the parts.

Intake valve, guide, and seat; 4 guide seals; 1 spring retainer; 2 valve keepers; 4 valve springs; an 03 Intake rocker arm assembly; a cam chain; and a clutch cover gasket. I was lucky, if it had been revving hard it would have also ruined the piston, the cylinder and the connecting rod.

The valve springs were only $16.87 each, and I should have replaced them at the major rebuild I did when a transmission bearing had failed at 300 hours but, I didn't think of it.

Thank you Dan at Motoxotica for the prompt parts support and Brett at Eric's motorcycle Co. for the encouragement and shop support.
