G'day,

I have purchased a new 550e 04 Berg and ive done about 8 riding hours on it...

I spoke to the dealer the other day and he reckons it needs a valve clearance to
"protect the heads" or somethign like that... basically giving me the impressing that if the valves arnt adjusted the bike could blow up...

How true is this and how often / important are valve clearances to be done?

lions and tigers and valves, oh my!

Hi Gerard,

It's very important to keep up on your valve adjustments. Too tight, and you can toast your valves. Too loose(most common), and it will become a pain in the can to start, decompressor no longer working correctly, plus the valves not opening fully.

If you want the dope on adjusting them, please check out the valve adjustment section of the FAQ.

thanks,

Gerard,
I'm sure you will recieve all kinds of advise on this matter.
I would go ahead and do your initial valve inspection and adjustment. It is my opinion to do the valve adjustment every 20 hours or as needed. As needed meaning you hear excessive noise from the tappets (loose) or you develope a hard start condition (tight). The inspection and adjustment intervals will let you judge wear and general condition of the valve train. The 20 hour interval is for basic trail riding. If you are racing you may want to increase the frequency to every 5 or 10 hours. After a few adjustments you should be able to guage how many hours you can go between inspections/adjustments.
After a few try's you should have the job down to 20-30 minutes.

And by the way json, when was the last time you checked your valves??

I haven't done 20 hours yet.
