My 2003 FS 650 E has been at the top KTM dealer in south africa 4 months now. It went in for a service and they test rode it and gave it the thumbs up. 3 days later I sent it to KTM's sales dept to sell. Two weeks later the sales man said it's smoking, so I booked it in to the workshop. The report came back and said the pistoon was cracked and the stator wasn't working properly.

6 weeks later the parts arrived and they changed the piston, rings, the stator and flywheel because the new stator requires the newer fylwheel. The bike start and idles fine but the bike has a splutter which starts anywhere from 3000 rpm onwards. They sent the bike to an autoelectical shop renownd for resolving bike ignition problems and they had it for 2 weeks and could not find anything wrong. The young mechanic is at a loss for words or ideas.

I get the idea that the replacement stator might be the incorrect one for my bike. What is the correct replacement partnumber for the 2003 Husaerg FS 650 E stator from KTM.
I want to help the mechanic to isolate the problem.

Guy, give me some ideas for the mechanic to try please!

Mechanic said they used stator/flywheel assembly partnumber form Husaberg is 250.285.01 which according to the parts manual is correct.

Is it worth trying the 250.285.01 or should we rater focus on timing? If so are the timing marks on the 2003's correct?

The marks were correct on mine when I changed it over. If that helps.

Hi Racingrash,

I can't under stand why they said it requires a newer type flywheel for one thing when they replace the stator you automatically get a flywheel as standard the other thing is there is no difference in flywheels from 99 to 03. This stator was not used on anything else it was only made for models between 99 to 03 and there is no KTM replacement.

Even though the bike was smoking was it performing OK ignition wise if so it sounds like they've pulled a fast one for some reason.

The reading you require are:

Black Red 3000 Ohms + - 10%
Black Green 165 Ohms + - 10%

All measured at 20 degrees C.

Regards

Sparks.

KTM phoned today and said that the ignition unit was faulty. They canged it an the bike is fine now.

Point is the bike was electrically fine to begin with and now I have a bill for us$ 2000 yes two grand.

They serviced the bike and then it all came apart.

I'm going to see them tomorrow morning.

I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks guys for all your help.

Good luck with that. It would have been cheaper and faster to ship the thing to BOSS and have him do the repairs and be done with it...
