I just got my rod kit from MotoXotica and am in the process of getting the crank true. is there some secret to doing these big four stroke cranks? I can not get the thing to budge ive got about 0.005" of runout and i want this thing perfect. Do I just need a bigger hammer or what?

Dave,

I don't own a machine shop, but when I had mine done a few months ago, I asked the same question, and was given the same answer you suggested, hammer. I would guess, if one were to doing this regularly, that a fixture could be made. You don't sound like that is an option...

Where to hit the crank is definately a question I can't answer from experience.

Dale may be the best guy to answer this one...

Good luck!!!

well, ive done many 2 smoke cranks but never one this big. You can buy a jig to press the crank together and have it in perfect alignment, but we dont do enough cranks to justify it. looks like im off to the tool store for a bigger hammer. I cant budge this thing even 0.001"

engineering shops use a press to push them over sofar and then remeasure because there is a certain amount of flex in a crank.

when they're done it's either spot on or it's out in the middle to the left and at the top to the right. if you really want to get it done there are machine shops that'll tackle it.

tapered cranks can be machined a few thou sometimes.

sure would be nice to have them thar fancy tools. but all i have is a press, a truing stand and a brand new hammer :D with a little hammering, wedging, measuring and remeasuring i have gotten it to less than 0.001" (0.03mm) the limit in the workshop manual is .03mm so i should be good to go, but im going to tinker a bit more and try to get even better.

thanks for your help guys!

I peresonally do not use a hammer nor a jig. Patience during assembly will put you within .002" TIR. Then simply knocking against a very large section of treated aluminum will bring you home.
