I did a search but came up empty handed.I keep reading about people going to a rear trials tire for offroad. The latest was a Dirt Bike comparison of a WR,CRF-X and Husky.Has anyone actually tried one?I was curious about their performance in various situations-mud,sand,rocks,hard pack, wet as well as cornering, braking and acceleration. If anyone has actually tried one-what did you think? Thanks,

AF

Whoa trendy !

At the Dirt Rider 24 hour last year, all the DR staff bikes had trials tires on them.
JL swore by them.
My guess is that they would be good for putting around, but they'd leave a lot to be desired if you were looking for traction. But I did not try them.

They are awesome in just about all conditions.

I like the MITAS trials tire for all year use. They are surprisingly good in the mud and sand as well. The extra sidewall makes your suspension feel cushier as well.

They seem to last 2-3X longer than a knobby as well.

They are the best tire I ever had on the rear. So far 1800 mi. on the rear of my KTM 200 and 300 mi. on my Berg so far. Run a Heavy Duty tube, double rim locks and 10-12 psi. and you will be fine. I ride from hard pack wet clay, mountain rocks to GP races and I would never go back to a S-12 or a 756. Some of the racers at the Last Man Standing and the Enduro Cross in Vegas ran them. I have run the Michelin and the IRC and noticed no real difference between the two.The IRC tire can be picked up for around $80.00

Go to any thumpertalk.com and ktmtalk.com and do a search on "x11". Most bang for the buck. Best all around tire at low speed.

well i race withthem a lot. last time came 3/153 last season. can't tell you which post but we've been thropugh this. for trailing they are excellent. in mud they're more difficult as you can't clear the knobblies!

give it a go!

Read all of the posts referenced above and then go get one.

I have been running Michelin X-11's on my bergs for years. Pricey at about $115, but wear twice as long as most knobbies so the actual cost is at least as good.
Some vulnerability to rocks, but if you run an Ultra-heavy duty tube you won't have a problem. Not too many places are any rockier than the Southern Nevada Desert and I don't get flats.

The only flat I have had was at the Moab Ride in 2005 when I tried to run 7 pounds of pressure and slammed into a rock ledge. Run 9psi or more and use a good ultra tube and it will work... don't get too worried about them being "very squirly at speed" unless you dual sport or do a lot of smooth power line fast riding. You won't notice.
Cornering, climbing, and traction are excellent. I don't think that I'd personally recommend them for a serious competitive event, but for aggressive trail riding they are superior.
One more observation: Trials tires do not slide, so you may have to modify your cornering style.

ranchoracer,
No I haven't. I am still burning through a partially worn X-11, but by the time of the Moab Ride I should be able to justify a new tire so I will try it.

Being an ex-desert racer it took a lot for me to mount the first trials tire on my bike and my friends were brutal about the "gay looking tire". Now that I am out of the closet I won't go back.

Yes, my buddy, (525 EXC), & I keep saying we're going to try one, should be good for our riding in the area north of Stonyford. Just been trying to decide, kinda thought we'd try the Mitas. Will be interesting to hear what you find.

first of all you can't get a plug colour with the kokusan ignition. whether it's a 130 or a 180 MJ fitted it'll always be white, alright????

so you've got to get your head around that first....

there are gaps in the exhaust system and popping is often a sign of new air joining old fumes to help secondary burning which you hear as popping. BUT, i had this on my WR400 and there was never really any real rhyme or reason for it.

what does work is to adjust the pilot screw underneath the carb out anti-clockwise 1/2 a turn. this or try in 1/2 a turn.

the tool to turn this screw is called a KOUBA T. but i made an el cheapo version which you can see in my gallery. only the 'commonwealth' countries have block connectors so perhaps you could tell us where on god's earth you're from?

Taffy,

:?: let me know what post you actually wanted to reply to and I will move your post...

Taffy,
who is Kim and what has plug colour got to do with a trials tyre? have you gone through a vortex or have you forgotten those pills the doctor gave you.
As for trials tyres... I have only used them for competitions where it is only permissable to have trials tyres or speedway tyres {19 inch rims}. the trials tyre is certainly a nice soft tyre but mine only lasted 3 competitons as the tyre wore so fast. it was noticeable in the technical sections how "grippy" they were. but lost grip on flat out sections.

FWIW,
Tuts mounted one of my semi-used X-11 trials tires on his CR500 last week and is now a convert. He reports that it is vastly superior in the Southern Nevada desert where the normal knobby just digs in and loses traction on snotty hills. If it'll work on a CR it'll work on anything!

I tried the Mitas Trials tire last summer and it worked OK, but not as good as the Michelin. It is less expensive but chunked some of the knobs so it was prematurely worn out. As far as high speeds go I swear by the Michelin X-11 and will challenge nearly anyone (NO not Johnny Campbell or the Knighter) to a race down some of our wide open dry sand washes with their bike running a knobby and mine with a trials tire.

i was lucky enough to have dezduster give me his x11 rear trials tire.
i put it on my cr500 and ran 14psi.
the increase in hill climbing is amazing.
the hookup on 'normal' terrain is much better too.
i don't think i will ever go back to a regular knob.

question.....
has anyone had a trial tire on the front?
what's that like?

happy new year

Can you mount the trials with Michelin Bib Mousse?
