am i the only one with the rear wheel all the way forward in the swingarm? the chain tension appears to be correct, but the 114 link chain with stock gearing has the rear wheel up far enough to rub the mudguard. it so happens that i have another chain (primary drive) on the kitchen table that i got for my ktm 2-stroke, so i can easily put a longer chain on, but then i'll still be stuck with a pretty short chain. it seems like if i could get hold of a couple spare did vm chain links i could lengthen that chain slightly using another master link and still use it on my 2-stroke safely so i don't have to toss a new chain. anyone else run into this problem?

anyone got a couple spare DID vm chainlinks they want to send me? i'm pretty sure i have a new master link for one.

Late model husabergs don't have the flip/reversable wheel spacers like late model ktms do?

it does have the reversable wheel spacers, but that ain't the problem. the problem is (imho) the chain is too short at only 114 links, so to get the right chain tension the wheel is so far forward that the tire rubs the little plastic mudguard gizmo behind the shock.

what are you doing inside anyway? not riding weather in cali? it's gorgeous here after last night's snowstorm. i hiked for a few backcountry ski turns this morning and now i'm hanging out finishing getting the new bike set up.

note that i had the same front fender rubbing the frame as bigbob, and i solved it the same way, with 2 washers added to the rear fender mounting bolts.

I guess your just gonna have to go out and stretch that chain alittle

hey berger, i guess everyone is sitting inside today, lol.

i just threw on a 116 link chain and turned the adjusters around and now it's perfect. all i gotta do now is get a couple DID links so i can lengthen the stock chain enough to use on my 250, or maybe just sell it to someone with a ktm 200. those little sprockets might be able to use a 114.

is everyone getting annoyed with me posting noobie questions every hour yet? haha.

You can make it up by taking us on more great rides, for as long as any of us are alive and riding. If I wasn't so far away, I would come over and show you how to ride that thing, so we all would be spared the misery. :D

I am stuck doing chores today (I just finished cleaning the toilet), and bike maintanence, but I plan on riding tomorrow until it rains. I have to do as much as possible to prepare for the wild boar enduro next sunday.

Mine is basically the same but I have winter studs in my tires.
Needless to say, I only have half a mud guard left.
It sounded like hockey cards in the spokes.
The inside part of my exhaust can has a few scrapes in it as well.

I also wonder why they come with the wheel so forward. I mean ALL the way forward. The only option is to get the longer chain. I was too cheap to buy a new x ring chain, so I rode it just like I got it. I have basically destroyed the plastic guard, but it is mostly still there and functional.

After 400 miles, the chain has only neede one small adjustment, by the way.

the 06 Fe450e comes geared real tall. I believe this is true of your 05 Fe550e also? probably they like top end speed or RPM management for emissions. You could drop a tooth up front and that would move your tire back some. My set up was fine tire wise but I added two teeth in back for woods riding, now I get a touch of rub on my mud flap....oh well

You may want that stock tall gearing.

Re: tire rubs rear mudguard, 114 link chain? spare links any

My experience has been that the tire will rub the rear flap until it wears a hole through.

Then it stops rubbing.

Problem solved.

My 04 450 did the same thing. Shredded that mud flap to pieces on the first ride just over 100 miles. As with yours the wheel was all the forward, my dealer gave me the mud flap off his 550 we flipped the spacers and laced up a new longer chain. Question is WHY do they come like that??

Re: tire rubs rear mudguard, 114 link chain? spare links any

I've never heard of this before on an off road Husaberg. I thought they all came with a 116 link DID X-Ring chain! Both of mine did, an 00 501 and 04 550! my rear tires (140/80 and 120/100 don't hit the rear mud guard, but I spun a rock a few times that cracked the guard on the 00. That would be a nasty thing to have happen on a 01 or 02 if they mount the Rectifier/Regulator on the mud guard.

I can see where the SM would have a shorter chain because of the smaller rear sprocket, but don't all of the off road models come with 15/48 final gearing?

I have the same problem with my 05 and it will be worst with a 120/90x19 size tire. I corrected it by removing the rear shock and letting the rear collaspe. See where the mud flap touches tire, then take a heat gun to reform the flap away from the tire. I gone through four flaps in 2005. I preferred the shorter wheelbase for traction and turning response on MX tracks. :)

Here's mine.

kelsow, you run a pretty minimal screw pattern. We usually cram 2 or 3 on each knob.

That must be an "after" ice racing picture, not a before.

Re: tire rubs rear mudguard, 114 link chain? spare links any

I had the same problem. A 114 link chain will cause the stock knobbie to eat up the guard. Dan gave me a new one and I dropped down one tooth on the countershaft and that gave me some slack. Then I replaced the stock tire with a new Pirelli and proceeded to tear up another. I finally got a 116 link chain and turned the adjusters around. Problem solved.

Re: tire rubs rear mudguard, 114 link chain? spare links any

lol. I have 3x that many on the other side as we are like Nascar,
we only turn left.

Re: tire rubs rear mudguard, 114 link chain? spare links any

I guess we don't technically "ice race" by definition.

We just go winter riding, so we screw the whole tire up. Loose lots of screws that way.

Makes sense to only screw up the side of the tire you need grippy. I'll have to get out of the house and try racing on ice (before it melts), not just frozen fields. (I need to since 9 months of our riding season are below freezing here on the ND/MN border!)

You southern folk are missing out on some fun! Winter riding is a hoot. Your spit freezes in your helmet and your feet quit hurting when they go numb. Tons of fun. 8O

You're all invited to Minnesota before the ice breaks.
