Yes indeed, I am splitting the case at ~150hrs. Oily spark plug and a wobbly piston says so.
I split my first case at the age of 12. This will be my second, ehmm, 29 years later... Early starter maybe, but no expert.
My then 50cc survived the new mains, so I am hopeful. :D

Shopping for parts, I wonder simply: OEM piston or otherwise. I´ve found Athena makes a kit, and there is a price difference I cannot ignore. Who else makes pistons for a ´02 501? What are your experiences?

Input would be most appreciated!

Of course there will be new mains and counterbalacer bearings/upgrade.
Come to think of it, can I fit the ´03 roller main bearings? Good or bad idea?

Sorry I don't know the answers to your questions. but I can't believe Taffy hasn't jumped in on this yet! :p

ahem! moi! liddle o me! whay?

dr corey i don't know what you do for sure!

unfortunately the 95mm piston is a rare beast! put your best price here and we'll beat it if we can!

i wouldn't go to rollers on the 501. totally unnecassary IMHO. could go wrong when no need, the 501 bottom end i believe has always coped well, it's the 650 that struggles allegedly...

single bearing C/B has been alright for me but yes the later may be a good idea.

i would concentrate far more on the camchain tensioner assembly and the cam follower bearings/ camchain.

although others recommend new valve springs etc. i'm a risk taker and wouldn't bother...

your call.

have i missed anything folks?

Taffy

:D Taffy, I was just thinking out loud ,beside that I don't know anything about '02 Bergs. not only that, I am struggling mightily with my new Magnetic Camshaft. I developed it to catch the remnants of the rockers as they plummet towards the spinning crankshaft. At this phase of testing, I'm experiencing problems with interference with the ignition caused by the rotating magnetic field thrown off by the camshaft. I can only imagine the lawsuits which might arise from overlooking such a debacle!

Dear doctorcory,
Magnetic camshafts....being at one with your carburetor....have you been riding without your helmet again?

that's one thing you can always say about UHE-people can take a joke....

.... although they don't always get them!

 So many fumes in this place.carb cleaner, brake cleaner...I really need to open a window or two. Helmet? I havn't solved the ignition interference problem yet, but if I drape a sheet of Kodak film across my lap, I now get free MRI's when I ride!

Well, after pulling apart I opted for the Athena at $250. OEM was $450!
I am also replacing the valves, camchain w. ´04 tensioner.
All bearings throughout, except outgoing roller and shift drum bearing.
Instead of replacing the con rod assy, I´m putting in a new big end bearing only. No measureable wear there.
The single-bearing C/B stays. I´m eating Ramen Noodles as it is.
This is an expensive way to remain single! :D

I´m determined to have a really good bike for ´06.
2005 was a drag with lots of wrenching and not much track time.

http://www.crossendurocompaniet.com/ sells Athena pistons for 1700 SKR, thats what I put in my -02 and I'm happy with it so far. Also i removed my single bearing c/b, to darn expensive. It vibrates a bit more now but I'm not that picky.
Are you gonna go for the -06 cam chain (800.36.013.000)?

I'm working on that 24 volt starting right now (with 12 volt charging). Actually got my berg in my livingroom now (What you gonna do when you live in a fifth floor apartment with no garage? And yes my wife is _very_ uderstanding... :D )

hi aspen,i installed a new woesner piston at my husa a year ago or so.
i paid 201 euros for it at a woessner dealer, same piston at husaberg dealer 300 euros!!

i had a problem though with it...either it came with the wrong rings or the oil rings groove had wrong dimensions with heavy oil consumption as result. problem solved by adding an extra oil ring from a xt 600 wiseco made special piston.
i learned that i was not the only one with this problem with woessner pistons, but anyhow i had not any further problems.

asso werke also produces pistons for bergs.

No problems with the Wossner in my 02 550. :) Just be sure to stagger the rings, so the open ends do not align.

hate to say it but the rings spin around the piston and i don't think it would be unusual if they did one rotation per few seconds or at most a minute.

i stripped my duke once after about 3-seconds of running and the rings had moved.
