Current conditions I woke up to this morning..

Temperature -40°C
Pressure/ Tendency 103.0 kPa↑
Visibility 24 km
Humidity 55 %
Wind Chill -47

Sigh - spring seems so far away on days like this :)

Get some studs and go riding!

I know -40° is a bit chilly but -20° would be fine.

1. get a hot rod snowmobile
2.Stud up a bike

4.Take comfort in the fact that someone is paying you a pile of dough to live in Yellowknife.

As much I meow about particularly cold days, I have been living in this kind of climate for so long, I don't think I could manage +38C - at least not without an endless supply of wobbly pops... I might survive but I'd be useless :D

Cheers

Had a couple sleds when I was younger, when our kids get a little older and won't freeze fingers & toes off, we'll get back into it.

As for the other 2 items - it's been awhile but I don't think it was for lunch...

Cheers

-40°C - You have gotta be sh*ttin me !
I think its too cold to even look at the bike in our winter at a chilly minimum of 0°C, thats overnight, not during the day.
No wonder you guys over there have the cold start issues - I wouldn't wanna start either.
Does metal shatter at that temp or what???

My personal 'best' outside working with a wind is -72C - not pretty. The medic at the site told me, in those conditions, life expectancy, exposed (little to no clothing) would likely be only several minutes.

It's hard to describe that kind of cold. Try this - I can spit at you from 2-3ft away and it will hit you as a solid piece of ice. You can actually hear your saliva freeze with a 'snap' as soon as it leaves your mouth.

I am older now and don't work that much in those conditions anymore but there is a lot of guys who make a living at it.

Here is what unloading a herc looks like at -42C..

Cheers

Mark

nb: Winter does not = 0C but I wish it did... :)

nb: Should mention it is an incredible feat the winter road ops folks pull off. They shipped nearly 11,000 loads last road season (7wks+/-) - this required something like 3-4 trucks every 17 minutes 24 hrs/day. From a logistics point of view, simply incredible.

did you know that -40c = -40f???? ah, it all works in mysterious ways 8)

I exchanged emails with your buddy several years back, and offered to take him riding here if he ever got over this way...

I was doing a bunch of work in Iqaluit back then but we finished up and I never did get back to meet him face to face.

Tell him to look me up if he ever gets over to Yellowknife.

By the way - he's a better man than me :) He rides in a lot colder weather than I would - I am just not that motivated.... I remember a pic of him huddled up in a shack warming up by his bike, waiting out a storm, as I recall.

Cheers

Is it possible I remember reading something about that? It sounds familiar.

Yes, he got stuck in the middle of no where and had to get rescued. It made "all" the papers and even a few magazines.

One time he and another guy from Hawaii (Torcherchambers) wanted to switch places.
It made for good internet fodder.

I was particularly impressed with his open water runs with the paddle tire and a ski on the front..

Me too,
